Alabama Students & Teachers Could See Major Shift In Schooling Thanks To State Lawmakers

Alabama is poised to potentially join the likes of Arkansas in bringing religious freedoms back to the classroom in April thanks to two pending pieces of legislation.
The Alabama House of Representatives moved in April to pass a bill requiring all K-12 classrooms display the Ten Commandments, a major win for religious freedoms in the state, according to the Alabama Reflector. The legislation is written specifically to ensure that local school boards are not made to pay for the poster-sized display and accompanying explainer. “This bill would require the State Department of Education to identify and publicize free resources that local boards of education may use to comply with the display requirement,” the bill reads, noting the importance of the Judeo-Christian religious and moral traditions that helped shape all of Western civilization, and found the United States.
Chaplains Return To Class?
After failing in 2024, a bill allowing for schools to have volunteer chaplains passed 91-4, moving forward through the state legislature, the Alabama Daily News reported. “What we’re trying to do is offer to our teachers — teachers only, not students — the opportunity to have a resource that they can go to to get counseling to get help if they’re struggling with something and they don’t have a person they can talk to that will be confidential and non-partial,” Republican Rep. Mark Gidley said of the bill. (MORE NEWS: ‘America Has Put Our Trust In God’: Trump Delivers Blunt Message To Those Trying To Rid US Of Faith)
If approved, Alabama would join the likes of Florida, Texas, and Louisiana in allowing chaplains to assume various roles within the state. Gidley noted that chaplains are already allowed to work with firemen, policemen and military members. “So many of our teachers are under great stress in their job and other things too and we want to do all we can to give them every resource possible to help preserve them and conserve them,” he added.
Keep Acting Local
Politicians you elect in your city, county, and state usually have a greater impact on your daily life than anyone in the federal government. During “off-years,” these local races send ripple effects throughout American communities. It is up to you to shape them.
It seems like every time we at Million Voices speak to lawmakers and their teams, they all tell us the same thing: if just 10 people in their district write letters about issues that matter to them, elected officials know they have a serious crisis on their hands. A thousand people could message that same lawmaker via email or social media, and it would mean nothing. But hand-written, or even printed and signed letters, will make your politicians take action (if they really care about your vote, that is).
Contacting your representatives should be easy, but there are myriad ways they can ignore your calls to action. That’s where we come in.
Yes, Million Voices helps you with voter guides. Yes, we send letters from YOU directly to your elected officials because it’s the only way to guarantee they’ll listen to you. Yes, we publish data, articles, text messages, and help bridge the gap between education and civic action. But what do you want? Tell us today.
We want to make YOU the hero of our American story by giving you the tools you need to make a difference, from your local, state, all the way up to the federal level.
Join us in our mission to advocate for religious freedom, support fair and secure elections, and uphold the values that this great nation was built upon. Tell us what you want from the next four years, and we will fight to make it a reality … again!
