“Dawson’s Creek” star James Van Der Beek shared a powerful video on his birthday, March 8, 2025, after what sounds like one of the toughest years of his life.

The beloved actor started his video by explaining how, during his younger years, he used to define himself as an actor. His identity was being an actor, his most notable role being Dawson in the hit teen angst drama “Dawson’s Creek.” He noted the definition was never really that “fulfilling.”

When he became a husband, things became “much better.” But then, becoming a father, “that’s the ultimate.” Van Der Beek described. “I could define myself then as loving, capable, strong, supportive: husband, father, provider,” he continued. What Happened During The Hardest Year Of His Life?

For a long time, Van Der Beek found that being defined as a husband, father, and provider, along with all the nuance those roles entail, was a really great way to live.

“And then this year, I had to look my own mortality in the eye. I had to come nose to nose with death, and all of those definitions that I cared so deeply about were stripped from me. I was away for treatment, so I could no longer be a husband that was helpful to my wife. I could no longer be a father who could pick up his kids and put them to bed and be there for them. I could not be a provider because I wasn’t working. I couldn’t even be a steward of the land because at times I was too weak.” (IMPORTANT: One State Could Decide America’s Entire Future In 2025 Should Voters Refuse To Act)

“If I am just a too skinny, weak guy alone in an apartment alone with cancer, what am I?” Van Der Beek asked a little later. To find his answer, the actor meditated. Can you guess what it was?

“I Am Worthy Of God’s Love Simply Because I Exist”

And if he’s worthy of God’s love, Van Der Beek realized he’s worthy of his own love, for himself. “And the same is true for you,” he told his followers and all of us living on God’s beautiful Earth.

He asked his followers to “run with it” even if the word “God” tripped them up. He had no way to define God, and noted how his own efforts to connect with God “are an ongoing process,” as is his recovery.
