Horrific Impacts Of Deadly Gov. Telework Detailed To DOGE

Dec 9, 2024

Republican Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst released a 60-page report Thursday (Dec. 6) regarding the damaging impacts of telework on the federal government.

“If federal employees can’t be found at their desks, exactly where are they?” Ernst asked in her report. It seems like a fair question, given the findings related to “multiple instances of abuse and failures stemming from the widespread use of” telework by federal employees, the Daily Caller News Foundation reported. Ernst’s investigations into telework also resulted in an August 2023 letter to 24 government agencies, which sought a review of significant issues resulting from the practice.

The latest details were released in conjunction with Ernst and your elected lawmaker’s first meeting with Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) leaders Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy in Capitol Hill, Thursday, where the pair presented their plans for the department. The report (titled above) found that “billions of dollars” are wasted on maintaining abandoned government buildings across the U.S. “Maintaining and leasing government office buildings costs $8 billion every year. Another $7.7 billion is spent for the energy to keep them running,” according to Ernst’s findings. “Billions more are spent buying brand new furnishings for the abandoned offices. The government also owns 7,697 vacant buildings and another 2,265 that are partially empty. An additional $14 million is being spent leasing underutilized space and nearly $1 million more for its maintenance.”

Employees for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) were also accused of “fraudulently collecting Washington D.C. locality pay while living elsewhere.” (GOOD NEWS: First-Time Buyers Fuel US Bible Sales Boom)

“One senior USAID employee lived in Florida for the duration of her employment but used an office supply store in Virginia for work-related correspondences to deceptively collect D.C. locality pay. Despite being required to report to the USAID office in Washington, D.C. twice every pay period, she was permitted to violate the telework agreement by her supervisor,” the report adds.

Deadly Consequences Of Gov. Inefficiency

The Transportation Department was found to use less than 15% of its office space at its headquarters in Washington D.C.. The shift to remote work was said to have delayed a response to a significant complaint about working conditions at a baby formula factory, which resulted in a recall and the death of nine children, DCNF added.

“The whistleblower complaint detailing safety concerns at an infant formula plant was delivered to the FDA in October 2021,” the report describes. These issues may also exist in the medical industry, as “thousands of pharmaceutical plants that manufacture antibiotics, cancer therapies, and other medicines have also not been inspected since prior to the pandemic.” (RELATED: Corporate Wokeness Is Dying As Wall St. Ditches DEI: WokeSpy)

“The [Public Buildings Reform Board] adds, ‘In addition to high costs, other problems with low utilization rates include environmental and health impacts,” the report continues. “The per person carbon emissions from heating and cooling nearly empty buildings, not to mention energy costs, are indefensible. Severely underutilized buildings can also pose health risks to their occupants as GSA recently discovered with Legionella outbreaks in many of its buildings when water stagnated in their plumbing systems from underutilization.’”
