A survey published in early February found that inflation is hitting some 39% of Americans Valentine’s Day plans in 2025.
Valentine’s Day is often seen as a Hallmark Holiday, not necessarily rooted in Christian tradition, but a fun excuse for you and your spouse to shower each other with a little extra love (though we should really be doing this every day!). This year, many Americans appear to be scaling back their plans thanks to the ongoing financial crises of the last few years.
A nationally-representative survey conducted by WalletHub found that some 34% of Americans aren’t expecting their beau to spend money on a gift for Valentine’s Day in 2025, while 39% are cutting down their plans altogether. “More than 1 in 4 Americans characterize people who go out to dinner on Valentine’s Day as suckers, show-offs, or insecure,” the survey noted.
How Are Spending Habits Hitting Valentine’s Day 2025?
It probably shouldn’t be surprising that cutting back on the largely unnecessary spending of Valentine’s Day is becoming a trend. The survey also found that nearly 1 in 3 people think “irresponsible spending is the worst money problem for a relationship in 2025.”
Bad spending is a bigger turnoff than bad breath, according to 59% of respondents to the survey. More than half of respondents also said they wouldn’t marry someone with bad budgeting habits — so why would you support a politician with the same problems?
The economy was the #1 issue for voters during the 2024 election. While we can already see huge moves being made at the highest levels of government — click here to read more about DOGE, tax cuts, and more — your local and state officials need to be as diligent with your money. A surprising finding from the WalletHub survey was that 72% of respondents felt that financial infidelity can be worse than romantic infidelity. Again, why not hold your lawmaker to the same standards? Afterall, it is your tax money that pays their salary. How else do you want it spent?
