Justin Trudeau Announces Resignation As Leader Of Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “dramatically announced his resignation as leader of Canada” after nearly a decade in power, Newsweek wrote Monday.

The announcement comes after Trudeau had some time to “reflect over the holidays,” which led to his intention to resign as his party’s leader just as soon as they find his replacement. He described the impending search for a new leader as a “robust, nationwide, competitive process,” which sort of makes it sound like a reality show — let’s hope it isn’t Squid Game.

“This country deserves a real choice in the next election and it has become clear to me that if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election,” Trudeau added.

The move comes shortly after Trudeau met with President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Largo residence in order to establish solutions to increase illegal border crossings between the U.S. and Canada, Daily Caller News Foundation reported in December.

Blaming Trump & Uniting Canadians

“Our country today faces a grave challenge. The incoming administration in the United States is pursuing a policy of aggressive economic nationalism, including a threat of 25 per cent tariffs. We need to take that threat extremely seriously,” said Trudeau’s former longtime deputy, Chrystia Freeland, as she resigned from working with the now-former Prime Minister in December.

Trudeau, however, managed to unite Canadians in their generalized dislike of their leader. Gender disparity between men and women’s perceptions of Trudeau seemingly disappeared in 2024, when a majority reported very and somewhat negative views of his time in office, according to The Star, citing Abacus Data.

“What we are seeing is the government of Canada itself is spiraling out of control, right before our eyes and at the very worst time,” Conservative Party leader and Member of Parliament Pierre Poilievre said during a press conference following Trudeau’s resignation, adding that the nation is in dire economic standing and defined by political instability. “Out of control immigration has led to refugee camps opening in suburban Canada and then we have 500,000 in the country illegally, according to government estimates.”
