Lawmakers Override Democrat’s Veto On Funding Pro-Life Centers

The Republican-controlled Kansas legislature moved Thursday to override Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s veto of three bills, moving in a big way to educate students on fetal development, treat preborn children as dependents, and continue funding pro-life centers.
Kansas lawmakers overwhelmingly voted (87-38) to override Kelly’s veto of House Bill 2062 in a move that signals huge support for life throughout the state. The bill “provides child support to children from the date of conception and declares that an unborn child ‘shall be recognized as a dependent and shall be allowed a personal exemption of $2,320.’ The exemption also applies to babies who are stillborn,” according to the Christian Post.
A second bill, HB 2382, requires “any school district that offers any course or other instruction that addresses human growth, human development or human sexuality” to show students “a presentation of a high-quality, computer-generated animation or high-definition ultrasound of at least three minutes in duration that shows the development of the brain, heart and other vital organs in early human fetal development.” (MORE NEWS: Has MAHA Made A Difference? A third bill, Senate Bill 125, was signed into law by Kelly, but she issued three line item vetoes from the measure. One of her decisions was to remove $3 million from the state’s pregnancy and compassion awareness program, which works to “enhance and increase resources that promote childbirth instead of abortion to women facing unplanned pregnancies and to offer a full range of services, including pregnancy support centers, adoption assistance and maternity homes.”
Kelly Decries The Votes
“The motives behind this bill are clear,” Kelly said of the veto of HB 2062. “Instead of helping pregnant women and families, the Legislature chose to pass a bill that connects the issue to a woman’s constitutional rights. This bill is a dismissal of the will of the majority of Kansans who voted overwhelmingly in 2022 to keep politicians out of the private medical decisions made between a woman and her doctor.”
Kelly said that supporting women in ways such as “mental health services, counseling, parenting classes, job training and the provision of car seats, cribs, maternity clothes, diapers, infant formula and other material items,” all of which were covered in SB 125’s funding, was “simply politically motivated.” (MORE NEWS: Arkansas Cuts Out Corruption & Brings Christ To Classrooms)
“Kansas women facing unplanned pregnancies deserve meaningful support from medical professionals who can provide evidence-based guidance, not from largely unregulated pregnancy resource centers,” she added. It is unclear whether Kelly understood what she was talking about at the time, as it sounded like she hadn’t read the language of the bill that clearly describes all the ways it helped women experiencing unplanned pregnancies who do not want to kill their unborn child.
The votes ultimately fell down party lines, suggesting that Republicans in Kansas are significantly focused on fighting to protect life.
Contact Your Reps To Protect America’s Future
It seems like every time we at Million Voices speak to lawmakers and their teams, they all tell us the same thing: if just 10 people in their district write them letters about issues that matter to them, they know they have a serious crisis on their hands. A thousand people could message that same lawmaker via email or social media, and it would mean nothing. But hand-written, or even printed and signed letters, will make your politicians take action (if they really care about your vote, that is). You can literally tell your lawmakers to override major legislation in your state if it will impact your life.
Contacting your representatives should be easy, but there are myriad ways they can ignore your messages. That’s where we come in.
