Missouri AG Bans Planned Parenthood From Dispensing Abortion Pills

Missouri Republican Attorney General Andrew Bailey released an order in mid-March informing Planned Parenthood-Great Rivers that they were prohibited from dispensing abortion pills.

The order stops Planned Parenthood from performing any chemical abortions in the state as the organization was said to not be in compliance with a law that requires it to have a “a valid plan to treat complications from chemically induced abortions.” (RELATED: Abortion Legalized In Wisconsin After People Of Faith Failed To Vote In 2023. “Missouri law requires you to adopt an approved plan to treat complications when using any chemical ‘in which more than 1 percent of the drug or chemical required surgical intervention after its administration,’” Bailey wrote in the order. “You do not have an approved plan in place.”

‘Track Record’ For Violating Law

Planned Parenthood was accused of having an “uncontroverted track record of violating the law in Missouri in recent years,” with later Bailey noting that “Physicians at Planned Parenthood organizations in Missouri have recently conceded — under oath — to violating the law and have been found by investigators and tribunals to have violated Missouri’s laws many times in recent years. These violations include repeated and knowing failures to comply with reporting requirements, to comply with informed consent laws, and to sterilize instruments.”

“As you well know, Great Rivers is not currently providing medication abortion. Great Rivers has stated repeatedly, and publicly, that it is waiting for DHSS to approve its complication plan before providing medication abortion. To date, Great Rivers has received zero response from DHSS despite our repeated follow up inquiries,” the organization’s Great Rivers CEO Margot Riphagen wrote in a full letter to Bailey.
