The North Carolina board of elections approved a plan (Oct. 7) to modify in-person voting for those impacted by the devastating floods and landslides from Hurricane Helene in Sept.

Thirteen of the counties most affected by the events of Helene will have more power to make sure that voting access is vouchsafed, according to The Post Millennial. Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Transylvania, Watauga, and Yancey, will see “a series of provisions that range from modifying early voting sites and schedules to allowing for additional locations for voters to drop off their absentee ballots,” according to ABC.

“Additionally, we know there’s going to be challenges regarding maintaining the poll workers at these voting sites, both early voting and election day. So what this resolution allows is county boards, by a bipartisan majority vote, to appoint election officials who are registered in other counties, to appoint emergency election day assistance, to re-assign poll workers to different locations,” the board of elections general counsel Paul Cox stated. Logistical Problems

“We really do have two critical issues here. One is to ensure that our citizens have access and that no one is denied the right to vote because of these logistical problems. And second, that we maintain the integrity to ensure that the count is correct,” chair of the board, Alan Hirsch noted.

Hurricane Helene “carved a 500-mile swath of destruction across Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, parts of Tennessee, and Virginia, with rural North Carolina” between Sept. 24 to Sept 29. Large numbers of volunteers and groups have gone into the disaster zone to support relief efforts, but many say their work is being stopped by federal officials. “[I]f you donate, donate to a church or give to individuals. They can not take supplies from church[es]! Church members will make sure your donations get to the correct hands,” one local said, asking others to share this valuable information widely.
