Pro-Life Activist Receives ‘Shocking’ Prison Sentence
Two pro-life activists were sentenced to multiple years behind bars Tuesday after being found guilty of violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act.
Lauren Handy, 30, and John Hinslaw, 69, were sentenced to four years, nine months, and one year, nine months, respectively, for their actions in organizing a protest outside a Washington D.C. abortion clinic in October 2020, according to Fox News. Hinslaw, Handy, and several others blocked access to the clinic and chained themselves to furniture inside while livestreaming their actions via Facebook.
“Our ‘crime’ was ‘attempting to stop the slaughter of late-term babies in the Santangelo abortion mill in Washington, D.C.,” Hinslaw said in a statement shared by Fox. “Additionally, the importance of these sentences cannot be overstated, since never before has ‘peaceful civil disobedience’ faced such legal violence as our federal law enforcement is now practicing!” (LEARN MORE: Trump Wants Life To Be A State Issue)
‘Shocking’ Sentence
Prosecutors alleged Handy and others violated the FACE Act “a federal law that prohibits physical force, threats of force, or intentionally damaging property to prevent someone from obtaining or providing abortion services,” Fox noted. Handy’s attorney asked for a one-year prison sentence for Handy, who has been in jail since her conviction in August 2023. (LEARN MORE: Why Men Must Join The Pro-Life Purpose)
Handy was said to have booked an appointment at the clinic using a fabricated identity. When staff opened the door, activists rushed inside, leading to an altercation that put one staff member in hospital for an ankle injury. Handy’s attorney Thomas Moore Society senior counsel Steve Crampton said her sentence was “shocking” and “a bit surreal.”
“This is not the America I know,” Crampton continued. “Not only did the judge read out this really harsh sentence, but she had the audacity to lecture Lauren Handy about her lack of compassion for the women who were going in to kill their children.” (LEARN MORE: Biden-Harris Campaign Spends $25 Million On Pro-Abortion Ads)
