Running to Win the Eternal Prize

Aug 21, 2024

“Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win!”

“All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified” (1 Corinthians 9:24-27)

This passage tells us to “run in such a way to win the prize.” Is that true of the way you are living? Or have you been running just enough to make it to the finish line without sweat or pain? In each race, there is only one winner. And the idea is to run like the runner who wins. There is a difference between the two. The winner has a certain strength in everything they do, while the mere competitor just survives and barely finishes the race at all. God’s word tells us to live like a runner whose goal is to win.

Athletes put so much effort into gaining a temporary reward, but Christians put even more effort toward achieving a prize that lasts forever. A runner has no chance of being a champion without a long-term, well-thought-out training and racing plan. Christians must have a growth and development plan that follows God’s lead. Eternal things are worthy of concentration and effort.

Your Call to Action

At the end of our race on this Earth, you will hear God say, “Well done,” and you’ll be truly and eternally thankful for the day you allowed yourself to move toward life change. What life goals will make you finish your race well? What do you need to do to hear “Well done”?

Reflect on this today as you go through your daily routine, and ask God how you can run the race well. Consider what adjustments you need to have greater discipline and focus. Identify goals that align with your faith and commitment to God, and set a plan to pursue them with dedication. Seek to live intentionally, striving not just to complete the race but to excel in it, ensuring your efforts are aimed at achieving the eternal prize. Let this reflection guide you toward a life that honors God.

“His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master’” (Matthew 25:23)

“But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal” (Matthew 6:19)

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1)

Prayer

Heavenly Father, guide us as we run our race with purpose and determination, striving for the eternal prize You have promised. Help us to train diligently in our faith, shedding any weight that hinders our progress. Strengthen our determination to live with intention and integrity so that when our race is complete, we may hear Your words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Keep our eyes fixed on the prize of eternal life, and empower us to pursue it with all our heart. Amen.
