A study conducted in early 2025 by WalletHub analyzed each of the 50 states and Washington D.C. by the overall wealth gap by racial group, revealing the worst jurisdictions for this ongoing divide.
The economy was the #1 issue for Americans heading into the 2024 elections, with many of our newly elected leaders promising to do something about this multi-layered crisis. The Biden-Harris administration left us with record credit card debt, looming housing and mortgage problems, and soaring costs of living (to name but a few). Economists are hopeful that the Trump-Vance administration can help tackle the economy in the months and years ahead, but we need to understand all these issues to help guide our local and state officials to the right solutions.
Understanding The Wealth Gap
America still faces a “wide financial gulf” between racial groups. To investigate this issue, WalletHub analyzed each state across 21 key metrics, including median household income, unemployment gaps, poverty rates, educational attainment, and more. “Wealth inequality is still very prominent in America, unfortunately. For example, in the most unequal states, white people earn as much as 50%-60% more than their Black peers and are 200%-300% less likely to be unemployed or living in poverty,” WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said in a statement supporting the organization’s investigation. “Combatting wealth inequality is no simple task, as it requires us to remove discrimination from education, employment and the housing market.”
Wealth Gap By State
Washington D.C. (District of Columbia) boasts the largest wealth gap in the U.S. at the time of writing, according to WalletHub. It is followed by Wisconsin, which is 10 points lower than D.C.’s total score. Nebraska, Iowa, and Minnesota followed. “The District of Columbia has the highest wealth gap in the country, which means, the seat of our nation’s government is also the most financially unequal place to live. In D.C., white people earn 64.5% more than Black people, the most disadvantaged group,” wrote WalletHub in its analysis. (RELATED: Leading Cause Of Death Worldwide Revealed)
West Virginia had the lowest wealth gap, followed by Alaska, Florida, Main, Hawaii, and Montana, the study revealed. “Future public policy should focus on both racial income inequality and expanded opportunities to enter into entrepreneurial opportunities. Efforts to expand the income base across the board for all racial groups probably will not close the racial wage gap, but will do no more than expand inflation since higher wages will invariably result in higher costs,” said North Carolina Central University professor of law Irving L. Joyner when asked about shaping public policy surrounding these issues.
