Teachers Told To Pass Migrant Students With Academic Issues

Teachers in Chicago, Illinois, raised the alarm in September after allegedly being told to give migrant students passing grades in all classes despite “severe academic deficiencies.”

Some 50,000 or more illegal immigrants have been bused to Chicago from Texas since 2022, according to WGN Radio. It’s unclear how many have remained in the Chicago area, but those who have are predominantly settled in Black neighborhoods on the South and West Sides, the outlet noted.

A group of Chicago Public Schools (CPS) teachers from these communities told WGN that administrators instructed them to give all migrant students a high passing grade in the last school year. “The teachers we spoke with work in CPS elementary schools and say they spoke no Spanish, while their migrant students spoke no English, making communication virtually impossible. They also added that because their schools were located in predominantly Black neighborhoods, they offered no English as a Second Language (ESL) support. Despite this, they say they were instructed by school administrators to give their migrant students a 70 percent in every subject and pass them on to the next grade,” the outlet wrote.

Massive Academic Issues

The teachers said that administrators pushed them to give the 70% grades even if the students had “severe academic deficiencies.”

Chicago is not alone in its failure to support the children of migrants adequately due to the Biden-Harris administration’s mismanagement of the U.S. border. Multiple bomb threats made in Springfield, Ohio, forced evacuations of schools and other essential buildings and infrastructure in early September 2024. The threats came within days of news breaking about some 20,000 or more Haitian migrants who were dumped in the tiny town over the course of the last four years. The pressure from the sudden population boom has left residents reeling.

“These dramatic surges impact every citizen of the community, every citizen,” Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said in September. “Moms who have to wait hours in a waiting room with a sick child, everyone who drives on the streets and it affects children who go to school in more crowded classrooms.”
