‘The Office’ Actress Speaks Out On ‘Judgy’ Christian Joke

May 3, 2024

“The Office” actress Angela Kinsey told her former co-star Rainn Wilson that she refused to say a scripted line in the hit series because she felt it was “super judgy” and didn’t accurately portray Christians or their love of Christ.

Kinsey played the role of Angela Martin on the NBC series, an extremely up-tight “Christian cat lady” who subsequently marries Wilson’s character, Dwight Schrute. Wilson asked Kinsey about her personal relationship with Christ, and she shared a lot. (LEARN MORE: Faith-Based Film ‘Unsung Hero’ Hits Big In US)

Apparently, Kinsey grew up Christian. Her mother was a Sunday school teacher and still leads a weekly Bible study. This integral part of her upbringing is likely why Kinsey refused to say a number of jokes written for her character that she felt did not accurately portray Christians to the enormous audience “The Office” brought in.

What Was The Joke?

“Yeah, actually, there were one or two times in which there would be a joke written for her that I thought was just really stereotypical, maybe one note. I like to think of her as a full, well-rounded person,” she told the podcast. “I do remember, I remember there was a particular storyline between Angela and Oscar, where Angela was being super judgy. I never went up to Greg about any joke, but there was a joke at Oscar’s expense, and I went up to Greg [Daniels], and I was like, ‘I can’t.'” (LEARN MORE: THROWBACK: Actor Tom Selleck Credits Christ For All His Success)

Oscar was an openly gay character in the series, and the joke was at his expense. “I just was like, ‘I don’t feel good about it. I don’t feel good about that. I don’t feel like that’s what Jesus represented to me,'” Kinsey says she told Daniels. “And he was like, ‘OK.’ And he heard me, and he took the joke out. And the episode, it was ‘Gay Witch Hunt,’ had so many already. But that’s the one pivotal moment I remember being like, ‘OK, this is feeling like a stereotype and very one note.’ I feel like she has more depth than that.”

Her Relationship With Christ

Kinsey noted that prayer is still very important to her and her family. And her family still says grace at dinner. Wilson then led the two if them in prayer on the podcast. (LEARN MORE: Actor Dennis Quaid Credits God For Helping Him Through Addiction)

Wilson has previously said there is an “anti-Christian bias in Hollywood” and that “As soon as the David character in ‘The Last of Us’ started reading from the Bible I knew that he was going to be a horrific villain,” Wilson previously tweeted. “Could there be a Bible-reading preacher on a show who is actually loving and kind?”
