Trump Survives Assassination Attempt
Former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt Saturday during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The former President was hit once in the top of the ear by a bullet, but was otherwise uninjured during the attack, according to Reuters. As Secret Service moved him from the stage, Trump appeared behind them, telling the crowd to “Fight! Fight! Fight!”
The alleged shooting was identified as suspected Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, the FBI stated. Law enforcement has yet to identify a motive for the attack. Crooks was fatally shot at the scene by a sniper after opening fire with a rifle. Bomb-making materials were also alleged found in his car.
One Killed, Two Critically Wounded
One man, identified online as Corey Compatore by social media pundit Benny Johnson, was killed at the rally by the shooter. Two others spectators were also critically wounded, Secret Service reported.
“In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win,” Trump said on Truth Social later in the evening.
Biden’s Response
“I’ve been thoroughly briefed by all the agencies in the federal government as the situation based on what we know now. I have tried to get a hold of the Donald. He’s with his doctors. apparently, he is doing well. I plan on talking to him shortly, I hope, when I get back to the telephone. Look, there is no place in America for this kind of violence. It’s sick, it’s sick. It’s one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. We cannot allow for this to be happening. We cannot be like this. We cannot condone this,” President Joe Biden said shortly after the attack.
“But the bottom-line is, that the Trump rally—the rally that he should have been able to conduct peacefully without any problem. But the idea—the idea that there’s political violence or violence in America like this, is just unheard of. It’s just not appropriate. I mean everybody—everybody must condemn it, everybody,” he said later in the statement.
