Uprooting Unhealthy Thinking Patterns and Finding True Healing
Healing can be a messy journey, even with Jesus in our lives. True healing requires more than a visit to a therapist, a social media post about someone who wronged us, and a “comforting” trip to Starbucks… despite what popular social media influencers might suggest. We can begin finding relief and softening our hearts by surrendering to God, allowing Him to uproot the negative patterns that trap us. These patterns often stem from lies of the enemy, perpetuated by a society that leads us astray in our relationships, jobs, and commitments. They steer us away from God when our lofty expectations aren’t met.
One common misconception is that God won’t give us more than we can handle. However, Jesus actually said in John 16:33, “In this world you will have trouble, but fear not, I have overcome the world.” When things don’t go as planned, we often blame God, and our faith falters. He never promised to shield us from failure or pain, but said He would be with us as we endure and navigate rough patches in life.
“Being true to yourself” is another misleading notion. It suggests that anything hindering our “happiness” or self-gratification is inherently wrong. This belief wrongly frees us from any accountability. In reality, true happiness comes from God and not self.
Lastly, “following your heart” is a deception that may lead us away from God’s intended path. God has a perfect plan for each of us, and following Him alone leads to genuine joy and peace. John 15:2 says, “He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and He prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.” By “cutting off the branches” and replacing the lies and misconceptions with His truth, God heals our hearts, guiding us into healthier patterns and making us better individuals.
