Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said Tuesday (Oct. 9) that he wants to eliminate the Electoral College.

Walz made the statement during a fundraiser in California for his and Vice President Kamala Harris’ bid for the White House, according to Fox News. “I think all of us know the Electoral College needs to go,” he told a crowd at California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom’s private home. “We need a national popular vote, but that’s not the world we live in.”

This is not the first time Walz has advocated for the eradication of the Electoral College. In 2023, he signed an agreement that “each state would allocate all its electoral votes to whoever wins the popular vote for president, regardless of how individual states voted,” Fox noted. (LEARN MORE:

“Governor Walz believes that every vote matters in the Electoral College and he is honored to be traveling the country and battleground states working to earn support for the Harris-Walz ticket,” a spokesperson for the Harris-Walz campaign told Fox. “He was commenting to a crowd of strong supporters about how the campaign is built to win 270 electoral votes. And, he was thanking them for their support that is helping fund those efforts.” (GET YOUR FREE NONPARTISAN VOTER GUIDE TODAY – know what your candidates are saying)

Who Started The Electoral College?

The Electoral College was created by the Founding Fathers in order to ensure that large states did not consistently control the entire country. Many Democrats have called for the end of the system, mostly since former President George W. Bush lost the popular vote yet won the electoral vote in 2000. Similarly, former First Lady Hillary Clinton lost the electoral vote while winning the popular vote in 2016.

Former President Donald Trump has previously stated that he thinks the Electoral College is a “disaster for democracy.” And without it, the popular vote would be “much easier to win.” (LEARN MORE: Tim Walz Controversies Outlined By Christian Media)
