Pastor emeritus of Irving Bible Church in Irving, Texas, Andrew McQuitty, said in November that at the height of the pandemic, roughly 1,500 pastors left the pastorate per month.
“At the height of the pandemic, we were losing up to 1,500 pastors a month in this country. Their churches were locked down. And these are mostly pastors out in the hinterlands. They’re not in metropolitan areas where they have a lot of peer communities,” McQuitty told “The Talk.”
“When they got locked down, they had no people coming to church. Therefore, they had no money flowing in. They had no encouragement, and they were just withering on the vine.” (LEARN MORE: Family Breakdown Connected To Collapse Of Christianity, Experts Say)
Pressure & Purpose
McQuitty noted how being a pastor is often harder than taking on any other type of leadership position. Obviously this was pushed to breaking point during the pandemic. He compared the experience to being like a football coach, where every fan in the stands thinks they have answer on what should happen.
But unlike regular leaders, Church leaders are often tasked with helping congregants through personal, financial, spiritual, and political decisions. “I just think that the pressure of all that is just too much. There is too much demanded of pastors today than what their training and experience has prepared them for,” he stated. (LEARN MORE: Powerful Group Starts Campaign To Destroy Anti-Parent Legislation)
What Is The Solution?
Pastors are part of a group of people who’ve positioned themselves as leaders in your community. But most of the other leadership positions are chosen through the electoral process. Every year, you get the option to choose your future leaders. So how will you decide on the best candidate for you in 2024.
