Who Will Lead The Democrat Ticket In 2028?

An article published in Nov. (11) by Politico outlined who they think may lead the Democrat ticket in 2028.

Pennsylvania Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro seems top-of-mind for Politico in the wake of the 2024 election. Shapiro was initially positioned against Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz on Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign for president. “Josh Shapiro is already fielding calls from Democratic Party leaders in Pennsylvania urging him to run for president,” Politico writes, before moving onto the Democrat’s other golden child …

California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, nephew of California Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi, apparently “held a Friday call with about 50,000 people in his small-donor network and called a special legislative session designed to Trump-proof California,” according to the outlet. “Newsom could be one of the biggest beneficiaries of Harris’s loss, given the sheer amount of overlap between their California-based networks. With his final term up in two years, he has long been considered a future presidential contender and his team has been building up to the moment when there isn’t an incumbent in his path,” Politico continued.

Next up is Pete Buttigieg, who is reportedly “set to tout his Cabinet accomplishments in a series of events as he winds down his official role,” Politico adds. (READ: Pennsylvania Probes Possible Voter Registration Fraud)

Buttigieg hasn’t ruled out a 2028 bid, nor has he said whether he’ll be running for Governor in Michigan in 2026 after relocating to the state and registering to vote  there. The outgoing transportation sec. raised $16 million for Harris and President Joe Biden, a little more than Newsom’s final tally. Politico also felt Buttigieg could easily take a beat on 2028, and wait again to run in the future. He’s only 42.

Walz is also apparently “drawing attention inside the Harris-Walz orbit,” which would make sense. “When Democrats start talking about 2028, six months ago, Walz’s name wouldn’t have been on the list, now it might be on the top,” a  former Harris staffer told Politico. Though the staffer may feel this is the case, these are the only serious mentions of Walz in the entire article. (READ: Tim Walz Controversies Outlined By Christian Media)
