Texas Redistricting Standoff Drags On

The redistricting fight in Texas continues as some Democrats return to the Capitol in an effort to reach quorum for the special session. Seven Democrats reportedly came back after Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows suspended direct deposit payments for members breaking quorum, a move meant to push them back to work.
Pay Suspensions for Absent Lawmakers
In a memo, Burrows wrote:
“Effective immediately, any members who is absent from the House for the purpose for preventing quorum will be required to collect their monthly paycheck and per diem check in person from the House Business Office. Direct deposits will be suspended for these members until the House restores a quorum.”
As of Friday, 95 lawmakers were present—five short of the 100 needed to reach quorum. The whereabouts of the remaining members, and whether they will return by Monday, remain unclear.
Governor Abbott’s Stance and GOP Frustrations
Governor Greg Abbott called the special session in July, but it has stalled due to Democrats’ walkout over proposed congressional map changes. In a Fox News interview, Abbott said, “Special session lasts for 30 days, and I will be calling special session after special session, and we are going to get these maps passed.”
Some Republicans are frustrated with Abbott’s handling of the situation. Bo French, chairman of the Tarrant County GOP, posted on X:
🚨BREAKING 🚨
Only 95 members of the #txlege showed up today. That means 55 democrats are still AWOL and breaking quorum. @GregAbbott_TX, they did not take your threats seriously. Now is the time to vacate their seats. You have the majority of voters’ support. Do it. pic.twitter.com/d0bIHAd7In

Texas State Representative Brian Harrison also criticized Republican leadership, calling the quorum break “100% preventable.” He posted:
🚨DEMOCRATS FLEE TEXAS TO BREAK QUORUM.
I am calling on Speaker Burrows to IMMEDIATELY issue a Call of the House and have them ARRESTED.
This was 100% preventable, and is yet another failure of Austin Republican “leadership.” pic.twitter.com/QwQ6EVeMi9

Public Pressure Builds
The public is weighing in as well. One user wrote, “Vacate their chairs. It’s the best option. Shut them down. There is no trust in Burrows. He put the same Democrat on the committee who told Democrats to flee.” Another stated, “I would take immense pleasure in seeing @GeneforTexas in handcuffs.”
Impact on Legislative Goals
Until quorum is reached, Abbott’s priorities—delivering disaster relief to victims of the deadly July 4 floods and approving new congressional maps—remain on hold.
While some call this a political game, others see it as a calculated strategy to preserve liberty and the common good. Political battles in America have often been heated, with leaders on both sides using every tool available. States and nations change, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse—but political maneuvering is a constant.
