Predator Protections Emerge in Wisconsin Schools

Recent reporting by The Federalist has revealed something deeply troubling about the state of Wisconsin’s public school system. Between 2018 and 2023, more than 460 educators were investigated by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction for misconduct. Shockingly, over 200 of them kept their licenses and continued working with children. This pattern, highlighted by state and local investigations, shows how deeply broken the system of accountability has become.

The Capital Times found that more than 200 teachers, aides, substitutes, and administrators were accused of sexual misconduct or grooming behaviors toward students. Many of these cases were kept from public view. Instead of ensuring transparency and safety, school districts and the Department of Public Instruction often moved offenders quietly or allowed them to resign without consequences. Parents were kept in the dark, and students were left vulnerable.

This isn’t just an administrative failure, it’s a moral one. When systems protect predators instead of children, they have lost their way. Parents entrust schools with their sons and daughters, expecting educators to model integrity, discipline, and virtue. Yet in Wisconsin, and increasingly across the nation, public schools appear to be more interested in protecting reputations than protecting kids. As The Federalist rightly noted, this has become a kind of “sanctuary” for accused groomers and abusers, shielded by bureaucracy and political cover.

A System That Protects Itself

Congressman Bryan Steil of Wisconsin condemned this failure, calling out the state’s leadership for their lack of accountability. He and others are demanding answers from Superintendent Jill Underly, who notably failed to appear at a recent hearing on teacher sexual misconduct, as reported by the Wisconsin Examiner. Her absence sent a chilling message: that leadership would rather avoid confrontation than confront evil in its ranks.

The problem, however, extends beyond Wisconsin. Across America, stories of educators caught grooming or abusing students are becoming far too common. While most teachers serve honorably, the few who exploit their position of authority can devastate lives. Worse still, when the system itself protects them, it communicates to victims that their pain is secondary to the comfort of adults in power.

This crisis cuts to the core of what it means to be responsible adults in a civilized society. Every community has a duty to protect the vulnerable, especially children who depend on us for safety and guidance. When schools allow predators to remain in classrooms, they betray the trust of parents and abandon the moral standards that hold our society together.

Accountability begins with truth. Parents must have the right to know when misconduct occurs, and the public must demand systems that value transparency over image. The media often hesitates to cover these stories out of fear of offending teachers’ unions or political allies, but silence is complicity. When the press and policymakers ignore the cries of children, the church must speak louder.

The Moral Drift in Public Education

Faith communities cannot remain silent observers. Churches and Christian organizations have a vital role to play in supporting families, mentoring youth, and advocating for moral clarity in public education. This is not about politics, it’s about righteousness and justice. It’s about protecting children made in the image of God from those who would exploit them.

The growing normalization of sexual confusion and moral relativism in classrooms has blurred boundaries that once protected kids. When school officials tolerate or even promote inappropriate behavior, they open the door for predators to operate with less suspicion. The same culture that insists parents have no say in what their children learn is often the one that conceals who is teaching them. That must change.

We should pray that leaders in Wisconsin, and across America, will have the courage to confront this issue head-on. Pray that those in positions of authority will repent of negligence and restore integrity to public education. Pray for protection over students who are too young to recognize danger but whose innocence is worth defending at any cost.

Faith, Action, and Accountability

And beyond prayer, we must act. Parents should demand to know how their local schools handle misconduct allegations. Communities must support laws that require mandatory reporting, transparent disciplinary records, and real consequences for predators. Legislators and school boards must refuse to tolerate cover-ups or “quiet transfers” that move the problem elsewhere.

Every child is a sacred image-bearer of God. Every teacher entrusted with their growth should be a person of moral character and accountability. When the system stops serving that purpose, it’s up to the people to hold it accountable.

As The Federalist reported, Wisconsin’s school bureaucracy has become a safe haven for the very individuals it should expel. That reality is unacceptable. For the sake of our children, and the moral fabric of our nation, parents and citizens must stand up, speak truth, and demand a higher standard.
