Top Christian Adoption Agency Ends Same-Sex Adoptions

One of the nation’s largest Christian adoption agencies is taking a bold stand for its faith. Bethany Christian Services announced it will once again align its foster and adoption work with biblical beliefs about marriage and family.
The decision marks a clear return to the Christian foundation that has guided the ministry for more than 80 years. For many people of faith, it is a welcome sign of conviction in a culture that often pressures believers to bend.
What Bethany Announced
Bethany Christian Services is based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and was founded in 1944. It is widely described as the country’s largest Protestant adoption and foster care agency.
In a recent announcement, the agency said its board voted to clarify and strengthen its Christian faith commitments. As Fox News reported, the change means Bethany will no longer place children with same-sex couples.
The heart of the change is an updated Statement of Faith and Belief. The statement affirms the authority of the Bible, the Apostles’ Creed, and the dignity of every person made in the image of God.
It also includes a clear section on marriage. The statement affirms the biblical design of marriage as a covenant between one man and one woman, established by God to reflect His love and faithfulness.
Beginning in June 2027, Bethany will only license and re-license foster families whose beliefs align with that statement. Staff and board members are also being asked to personally agree with and live by these commitments.
This is a significant shift for the ministry. It returns Bethany to the standard it held for most of its history before a brief change of course several years ago.
A Reversal of a 2021 Decision
To understand the news, it helps to know what came before. In 2021, Bethany began allowing same-sex couples to foster and adopt through its programs.
That change did not happen in a vacuum. It came after a lawsuit in Michigan and a contract suspension in Philadelphia put heavy pressure on the agency to comply with new rules.
Now the ministry is reversing that decision and returning to its biblical convictions. Leaders say the move was not driven by outside pressure or politics.
Instead, the agency described it as a decision made through prayer and careful thought by its board and leadership. The goal, they said, was to reinforce the Christian identity that defines the ministry’s very reason for existing.
The board chair put it plainly, saying their faith is not simply one part of the work but the reason the organization exists. That kind of clarity is refreshing in an age when many institutions blur their values to avoid controversy.
Clarity, Conviction, and Care
Bethany’s leaders have framed the change around three simple ideas. Speaking with The Christian Post, the agency’s CEO explained that the move is about clarity, conviction, and faith.
Importantly, Bethany has stressed that this is not about turning anyone away from help. The agency says it will continue to serve all children and families who seek its care, regardless of their background or beliefs.
This reflects a truth at the heart of the Christian faith. We are called to love and serve every person with compassion, while still holding firmly to God’s design for the family.
Loving our neighbor does not require us to abandon our convictions. A ministry can treat every person with kindness and dignity while still believing that children flourish best with a mother and a father.
That balance is exactly what Scripture models. The Bible calls believers to care for the orphan and the vulnerable, and it also upholds marriage as a sacred covenant between a man and a woman.
There is also a practical wisdom in the decision. Bethany’s leaders note that Christians are the most likely group to step forward and foster or adopt children in need.
By standing firmly on its faith, the ministry hopes to attract more believers to the cause. The need is real, and faithful families are often the ones most willing to open their homes.
Why This Matters for the Next Generation
This story is about more than one organization’s policy. It speaks to a larger question about the future of faith-based ministries in America.
For years, Christian groups have faced growing pressure to set aside their beliefs or risk losing contracts and funding. Bethany’s stand shows that ministries can hold their ground and remain true to Scripture.
The next generation is watching how believers respond in moments like this. Children learn what we truly value by seeing whether we stand firm or quietly give way.
This same cultural battle is playing out in many places. Million Voices recently reported on how the Cleveland Clinic ended gender care for minors, another sign that institutions are rethinking their direction.
These moments matter because they shape the world our children will inherit. When ministries stand on biblical truth, they model courage and faithfulness for those who come after them.
Bethany’s decision is ultimately a hopeful one. It points to a future where faith-based care can thrive without compromising its core beliefs.
For families of faith, the message is encouraging. With clarity, conviction, and love, Christian ministries can continue serving the most vulnerable while honoring the God who calls them to the work.
As believers, we are called to pray for our leaders and our nation. Pray for wisdom for those making these decisions, and for safety and dignity for all people affected by them.
That’s where we come in.
Prayer is at the heart of how Million Voices connects faith with civic life. Our Prayer Guide: Pray for Our Government Officials By Name is a free resource designed to help individuals, families, and small groups lift up the men and women who serve in public office—across every level of government and regardless of party.
Rooted in the scriptural call to pray “for kings and all those in authority” (1 Timothy 2:1–2), the guide offers a thoughtful framework for interceding on behalf of our leaders: for wisdom in their decisions, integrity in their conduct, protection for them and their families, and a heart for serving the common good.
Whether you’re looking to deepen your personal prayer life or to gather others in praying for our nation, this guide is a meaningful place to start. Download it here: https://millionvoices.org/mv-prayer-guide-pray-for-government-officials/
We also offer an opportunity to connect faith with action. Through our Write Now Campaign, volunteers send letters to low-propensity voters in key areas, helping inspire them to engage and make their voices heard.
