America Likely Wouldn’t Exist If Christians Stayed Out Of Politics, Says Greg Laurie

Pastor Greg Laurie shared some deep thoughts in mid-May about Christians and our place in politics, and we wanted to share them with you today.
Laurie’s post started by pointing out that “some people say, ‘Christians—especially pastors—should stay out of politics.'” His response to this? “Why?” (READ MORE: Faith Leaders Call On Trump To Protect Christian Refugees)
The gospel is needed in “every part of life,” Laurie continued, noting that this ” includes the public square, politics, and the halls of power.” Believers are needed in these arenas, but, more importantly, we need the gospel to guide us through. “And let’s be honest: if Christians hadn’t stepped into the political arena, there likely wouldn’t be a United States of America,” he added, before noting in an op-ed that a majority of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were Christian, “27 had formal theological education,” and John Witherspoon was a Presbyterian minister.

Laurie’s Biblical Worldview
Laurie is quick to break down the myth that we exist in a nation that separates church from state. While this belief stems from a short-held Supreme Court ruling, known colloquially as the “Lemon test,” the underlying law was essentially thrown out in 2022 after SCOTUS ruled that a high school football coach had the right to pray at the 5-yard line at the end of each game. Countless acts have since cultivated a movement toward greater religious freedom in public spaces, particularly schools. “The First Amendment says it clearly: ‘Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,'” Laurie added. “That’s not a wall of exclusion — it’s a shield of protection.”
Mislabeled As ‘Partisan’
Many people label Laurie as “partisan” when he involves himself in politics, but did you know that out of the three U.S. presidents who’ve met Laurie, only one has ever asked him to pray for him? That leader is President Donald Trump, and “he’s done so on multiple occasions,” Laurie noted. (MORE NEWS: ‘Hollow Faith’: How Kelsey Grammer Found ‘Reawakening’ After Sister’s Murder)
He’s also said publicly that he would have prayed for former Vice President Kamala Harris had she asked him during her campaign. He recently prayed at a campaign rally in Coachella, where he was asked to lead a crowd of thousands in The Lord’s Prayer. “It was a moving moment of unity under God,” he described.
Can you imagine our strength if every Christian joined together in prayer, but also political action?
“There are about 90 million Evangelical Christians in America. Over 40 million don’t vote. And 15 million aren’t even registered,” Laurie stated. “That needs to change.”
As Million Voices CEO John Graves often says, Jesus calls us to be the salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16). Laurie broke this down by saying that “salt preserves what’s good; light reveals what’s true.” If we speak up for our faith, speak out against evil, “and yes — we vote” there is nothing that a collective united people of faith cannot achieve for America, and hopefully the rest of the world.
Laurie asked that we join him in prayer for our leaders.

Protect Christians Today: USE YOUR VOICE
No matter how you feel about anything you read on Million Voices, you have a right to use it and your lawmakers depend on YOU — the voters — outside of election season, to exercise your right and guide their agenda. Changing your world starts with your locally elected officials, and goes all the way up to the White House. Did you know that it is your responsibility to tell your lawmakers what you want to happen during their time in office?
Just because you voted for them in November (or maybe you didn’t) doesn’t mean your role in shaping America’s future is over. Now is the time to actually engage with your lawmakers by lobbying them to support the change YOU want to see.
Contacting your representatives should be easy, but there are myriad ways they can ignore your messages. That’s where we come in.
Yes, Million Voices helps you with voter guides. Yes, we send letters from YOU directly to your elected officials because it’s the only way to guarantee they’ll listen to you. Yes, we publish data, articles, text messages, and help bridge the gap between education and civic action.
We want to make YOU the hero of our American story by giving you the tools you need to make a difference, from your local, state, all the way up to the federal level.
Join us in our mission to advocate for religious freedom, support fair and secure elections, and uphold the values that this great nation was built upon. Tell us what you want from the next four years, and we will fight to make it a reality … again!
