Under the leadership of President Joe Biden, the Department of State has opted to ignore the 52,000 or more deaths of Christians in Nigeria for the third year in a row.The Biden Administration published its “Countries of Particular Concern” list in early January. The President is legally required to review the status of religious freedom in all countries on an annual basis thanks to the International Religious Freedoms Act (IFRA) passed in 1998.
Countries that “engaged in or tolerated severe violations of religious freedom during the previous year, but does not meet” all the criteria for being designated as a CPC to a “Special Watch List” (SWL).
Who Made The List?
Burma, the People’s Republic of China, Cuba, Eritrea, Iran, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, are the only nations who met the levels of concern needed for Biden. Under the SWL, Algeria, Azerbaijan, the Central African Republic, Comoros, and Vietnam, made the list.
Why Ignore Nigeria?
Violent attacks against Christians in Nigeria are on the rise, according to the Washington Stand. On Christmas Eve 2023, a group of gunmen killed an estimated 160 people and wounded countless others. As of 2023, 5,621 Christians were killed globally, 90% being in Nigeria.
But since 2009, an estimated 52,250 Nigerian Christians have been slaughtered in their home state. As a result of these attacks, the Trump Administration placed Nigeria on the “Countries of Particular Concern” list in 2020.
No explanation was provided over why Nigeria was removed from the list in 2021. It’s believed Secretary of State Antony Blinken decided to remove the nation. Since this time, more than 3,000 Christians are also believed to have been abducted, along with more than 5,621 killed.
