A group of students at Western Kentucky University (WKU) shared their faith in March by covering the campus sidewalks in the entire Gospel of John — all 879 verses!

The team of some 65 to 70 students joined together on the evening of March 10 at the WKU campus to write the entire Gospel of John across the campus —  a public university — and completed their mission in just a few hours, according to Fox News. The initiative was spearheaded by Baptist Campus Ministry (BCM) and involved members of other Christian campus groups, as well as Campus Crusade for Christ and Hilltoppers for Christ.

The idea apparently came from students at other universities, who shared their activities in chalk writing the Gospel on social media, Fox added. Do we have a new trend on our hands? (RELATED: ‘Pause Button’ Needed On Trump’s College Campus Comments, Says Surprising Group Of People)

Gospel Chalk Movement

Apparently this whole thing started after an account called “Gospel Chalk Movement” started posting videos on TikTok of similar events at universities across North Carolina in 2024. “We hope to continue a chain that other colleges can [follow] as well,” BCM president Cameron Shaw told Fox.

Students received permission from the school to write out the Gospel in chalk across the sidewalks and other spaces. Shaw said he was hesitant at first, believing the group’s actions may spark a negative response; these fears were quickly overcome as they realized what a great ideas this was to share the Bible with their peers. “The main reason for us doing this ultimately is to spread the good news, or the Gospel,” BCM vice president Luke Alford explained. “We live in a time when there is a lot of uncertainty and confusion in the world around us, especially in a college setting full of a bunch of people still figuring out how to be an adult. I firmly believe that the Bible has the answer to these questions, especially in the Gospel of John.”

Some Negative Reactions

Student Rachel Harwood said some students did end up posting negative responses on another social media platform, but this didn’t leave her disheartened. “Even though the responses were negative, students were still talking about the truths that are in the Bible. This is just as important as positive comments because it makes students think about where they stand when it comes to the most important decision in their lives,” she explained.

“This also did not discourage the students at the BCM to stop talking to students and faculty on campus. The next day the BCM had a table and chalkboard set up to talk to students and get their opinions. This was a great way to verbally share the Gospel with students,” Hardwood added.

Great American Revival Is HERE!!

We are living through a beautiful Great American Revival, which seems to be impacting young people far more so than their elder counterparts. “I know at BCM, we have seen an uptick in students almost every single year, especially freshmen, that are just deeply involved and interested in the Gospel and in what faith is and who Jesus is,” Shaw added, following a national trend of college students turning to Christ.
