Cost Of Living Crisis Causing Baby Delay
A study conducted in 2024 found that 22% of people aged 18 through 34 have delayed having children due to the cost of living crisis.
Out of 4,000 participants, almost a quarter stated their main reason for not starting a family is the cost of living in the modern world, according to the Mirror. These individuals reported that they adjusted their original plans to have children, with 8% of saying the main reason is because they are financially “strapped.”
The ongoing decline in global economic standing has also left many families with young children without any spare cash for unexpected expenses. “We’ve been tracking how people have been responding to the financial challenges of the rising cost of living for more than two years and it’s clear we’re now starting to see that people are making changes to their longer-term life plans,” Royal London consumer finance expert Sarah Pennells said. “When prices for food and energy were increasing, we saw people cut back and make changes to their spending and shopping habits, but now we’re seeing that some major life decisions are being delayed as people are weighing up whether or not they can afford to act on the plans they’d made.”
What About The US?
Like many other developed countries, the U.S. is facing an almost identical crisis. Americans apparently entered 2024 with more debt and less in their checking and savings accounts than possibly ever before, according to Market Watch.
Inflation and the economy are top concerns for voters heading into the 2024 elections. A poll conducted in March 2024 found that 55% of registered voters believe President Joe Biden’s economic policies will make consumer prices continue to increase as millions of families struggle under his inaction today. Some 44% of respondents to the same poll said former President Donald Trump’s policies will likely make consumer prices fall, while 22% think he’ll make no difference. A total of 34% think he’ll make things worse.
