Country Bans Puberty Blockers For Children

England’s National Health Service (NHS), a publicly-funded system, has decided to not offer puberty-blocking drugs to children, claiming more evidence is needed on the benefits and harms of such practices before anything is recommended to the public.

NHS said Friday that “outside of a research setting, puberty-suppressing hormones should not be routinely commissioned for children and adolescents,” according to The Associated Press. Though the service is still allowing children to receive puberty blockers under “exceptional circumstances,” clinical studies will likely start in 2025.

At least one major provider of so-called “transgender care” in England has already shut down, saying there was too much demand for treatments with little evidence of successful outcomes. Putting Data First

The move by England’s NHS is significant and lays a foundation for the U.S. to also start doing proper research into these potentially deadly medical interventions currently being carried out on children. Not only is the NHS not going to give children drugs with no known outcomes, but members will also “strongly discourage” families go elsewhere for the medications.

In 2020, England’s High Court ruled that children under the age of 16 were not really able to give informed consent to medical treatment. This was subsequently overturned in 2021, allowing doctors to prescribe puberty-blockers to children without parental consent.
