Don Lemon Pleads Not Guilty in Church Protest Case

Media personality Don Lemon appeared in a federal court in Minnesota on Friday, pleading not guilty to charges that strike at the heart of our religious freedoms. The case stems from his alleged involvement in disrupting a Sunday church service, a sacred space meant for worship and peace. This incident forces us to confront critical questions about freedom, responsibility, and the sanctity of our most cherished institutions.

The charges against Lemon are severe, including conspiracy to violate the right of religious freedom at a house of worship. He also faces charges under the FACE Act, a law designed to prohibit the disruption of religious services. It is a profound irony that this same act has been weaponized by the Biden administration against peaceful anti-abortion protesters.

The events unfolded when Lemon livestreamed his presence with a group of anti-ICE agitators at Cities Church in St. Paul. The Daily Wire reported that the video showed the group planning their actions before entering the service and causing a disturbance that terrified congregants.

Lemon described the operation as a “secret” on his show, creating a cloud of suspicion around his role. During the planning, he even admitted to turning his camera away to protect what he called “critical information.”

Following the disruption, federal authorities arrested Lemon in Los Angeles, interrupting his coverage of the Grammy Awards. He appeared in court alongside activist Nekima Levy Armstrong and three others, who are also charged for their alleged roles in organizing the chaos.

Outside the courthouse, roughly two dozen protesters gathered, chanting slogans like “Protect the press” and targeting figures like Attorney General Pam Bondi. Lemon, accompanied by his attorney Joe Thompson, remained silent as he entered the building. However, his attorney, Abbe Lowell, made it clear they intend to raise First Amendment issues as their primary defense.

Journalism or Calculated Agitation?

Don Lemon has consistently argued that his actions are protected under the First Amendment, claiming he was there as an independent journalist. In his livestream, he was heard telling parishioners, “I’m just here photographing, I’m a journalist.” He reiterated this point by stating, “We’re here just chronicling and reporting. We’re not part of the activist, but we’re here just reporting on them.” This defense raises a vital question for us all: Where does journalism end and participation begin?

The attorney representing Cities Church, Renee Carlson of True North Legal, firmly rejects this defense. She stated, “By pleading not guilty, Don Lemon and other defendants are doubling down on their claim that the press can do whatever they want under the auspices of journalism.” Carlson emphasized that this was a “coordinated planned operation” and not a spontaneous act of reporting. The sanctity of a sanctuary cannot be violated under the guise of newsgathering.

Her words serve as a powerful reminder of our shared values and the need for truth. “The First Amendment does not protect premeditated schemes to violate the sanctity of a sanctuary, disrupt worship services, or intimidate children,” Carlson declared.

During the court hearing, Lemon’s lead attorney, Abbe Lowell, who has also represented Hunter Biden, requested the return of his client’s phone. Fox News noted that prosecutors revealed the phone is with the Department of Homeland Security, pending a search under a sealed warrant. This detail suggests that the investigation into Lemon’s coordination is far from over.

Lemon’s legal team includes Joe Thompson, a former prosecutor who recently resigned from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Thompson had previously led investigations into major fraud cases, adding another layer of complexity to the legal landscape. The involvement of high-profile legal minds indicates that both sides are preparing for a significant battle over constitutional rights.

Reports indicate that Attorney General Pam Bondi personally directed the arrests, signaling a return to the rule of law. Bondi emphasized that citizens have the right to worship freely and safely without fear of intimidation. This firm stance reassures believers that their Sunday services will remain a time of peace and reflection.

The Human Cost of Disruption

The impact of that day’s events was not lost on Lemon himself, though his reaction has been confusing. As he left the church, he was recorded acknowledging the distress caused, pointing out a father comforting his upset child. Yet, he later justified the disruption, stating, “You have to make people uncomfortable in these times.” He argued that disrupting lives is necessary to draw attention to perceived injustices.

According to a federal affidavit, the agitators “intimidated, harassed, oppressed, and terrorized the parishioners, including young children.” Parents described being blocked from reaching their children in the childcare area downstairs, a terrifying scenario for any family. One churchgoer expressed fear that the agitators might have weapons concealed under their jackets. These accounts paint a picture of fear, not peaceful protest.

The protest at Cities Church was sparked by the fact that an ICE official serves as a pastor there. Protesters interrupted the service by chanting “ICE out” and referencing the recent death of Renee Good. The Trump administration has taken a firm stance on these disruptions, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt warning that intimidation of Christians will not be tolerated. Even clergy opposed to strict immigration policies have expressed discomfort with targeting a house of worship.

According to KUTV coverage, Lemon has seen a surge in social media subscribers and has been celebrated at events like the Grammy Awards despite the charges. He continues to frame the arrest as a civil rights issue, comparing himself to past protesters. “I believe this is bigger than me, this is about the First Amendment and freedom of the press,” he told his viewers. However, freedom of the press does not include the freedom to terrorize worshipers.

A report from Million Voices highlights that this case strikes at the very foundation of our freedom. When political agendas trample on the sacred act of worship, we are all at risk. We must demand accountability from media figures who use their platforms to amplify disorder rather than report the truth.

A Call to Stand for Truth

This concerning situation reminds us that our rights are not absolute but come with a profound responsibility to respect the rights of others. The outcome will send a clear message about whether our society will protect its most sacred spaces or allow them to become stages for political theater. We cannot allow our churches to become targets for political agendas.

The penalties facing the defendants are significant, ranging from a year in prison to substantial fines. With nine people charged in total, including another independent journalist named Georgia Fort, the scope of this prosecution is broad. It signals that federal authorities are taking the disruption of religious services seriously. This is a critical moment for the rule of law.

As believers, our role is clear and urgent. We must pray for our leaders, for our justice system, and for a return to civility and respect in our public discourse. We must also use our own voices to defend the institutions that form the bedrock of our free society. Silence in the face of such disruption is not an option for those who cherish liberty.
