Everything You Need To Know About Angel Studios’ Next Movie ‘The Last Rodeo’

Mar 7, 2025

Angel Studios revealed Thursday (Feb. 27) the trailer for upcoming movie “The Last Rodeo,” starring fan-favorite Neal McDonough.

It takes a certain type of grit to put yourself on the back of a raging bull, and hold on for dear life while that man animal tries to pound you into the ground. But that’s exactly what a small handful of men do on a regular basis. Riding raging cattle is how they pay their bills.

One wild story within this uniquely American world is coming to theaters in May, thanks to everyone’s favorite crowd-sourced Angel Studios. (IMPORTANT: One State Could Decide America’s Entire Future In 2025 Should Voters Refuse To Act)

What Is The Movie About?

The film “shares the story of Joe Wainwright (Neal McDonough), an aging retired champion bull rider, and his daughter Sally (Sarah Jones) who face a crisis that can only be solved by Joe entering and winning a bull riding competition. Joe must connect with a bull fighter and his estranged best friend of many years, Charlie Williams (Mykelti Williamson) to enter the legends contest as the oldest contestant in history. Despite strained relations with his strong-willed daughter, he must confront his demons and consider the greatest sacrifice for his family,” Angel Studios said in a statement shared with Million Voices.

Alongside the brilliant casy is PBR Champion Daylon Swearingen, and the movie was made in collaboration with the Professional Bull Riding Association. (EXCLUSIVE: State Law Could Cut Food Costs With Overhaul Of Farming, Agricultural Industry)

“Joe Wainwright is on a journey from America’s heartland into the hearts and souls of everyone who’s ever loved their family so much they struggled for the words to express it properly. This film has an incredible heart with a universal message of love, vulnerability, and reconciliation that the world so desperately needs right now. And my frequent collaborator and friend Jon Avnet is the director who could best bring this story to audiences around the world,” McDonough said of the project.

Is This A Faith-Based Movie?

It is oddly unclear as to whether “The Last Rodeo” is an explicitly faith-based movie. While McDonough is best known for his commitment to Christ, in and outside of his work, he’s also played some pretty ungodly characters (some of you may have seen him as Kevin Costner’s gruesome antagonist in “Yellowstone”).

McDonough and his wife, Ruvé, have partnered with Angel Studios for the last year. Apparently the big wigs behind the scene are thrilled with their latest work. “Director Jon Avnet’s vision and execution of the film is nothing short of exceptional. The Angel Guild consistently champions projects that inspire hope and healing, and we believe this film will significantly advance our mission to illuminate stories in a profound and impactful way,” President of Angel Studios Jordan Harmon said of the collaboration. Their previous works include “The Shift” and “Homestead.”
