Focus on the Fruits! GENTLENESS

Oct 7, 2023

“Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love” (Ephesians 4:2).

Gentleness is caring for people or things in a soft, supportive, and tender manner. While we see the importance of gently handling kids or aged adults, most people respond best to gentle treatment. Society often views gentleness as weak and passive, choosing to be cold and abrasive instead. A famous fashion designer once stated, “Gentleness doesn’t get work done unless you happen to be a hen laying eggs.” Yet, what does God say about this fruit of the Spirit?

The Bible signifies gentleness as strength, self-control, and inner peace. Jesus was the perfect model of gentleness, even while on the cross. In the world’s darkest moment, He offered words of hope to the man on the cross next to Him. He said, “Today, you will be with Me in paradise” (Luke 23:43). Even though He was experiencing torturous death, He extended comfort to a condemned thief. In Luke 23:34, Jesus says, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” His gentleness and strength simultaneously summed up how He lived His entire life on Earth.

The fruit of gentleness is essential; it is the face of God on us to others. The Holy Spirit demonstrates His compassion through our lives. We are called to honor Jesus and share His Gospel in gentleness, respecting others. (1 Peter 3:15-16).

Call to Action:

How can we extend a gentler spirit to others? Read and pray over these scriptures and let God’s Word resonate with you.

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” (Proverbs 15:1).

“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32).

“Gentle words are a tree of life; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit” (Proverbs 15:4).

“Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness” (1 Timothy
6:11).

“But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere” (James 3:17).
