GRAVES: America, Do Not Ignore Wisconsin If You Care About Free And Fair Elections In Your State

It doesn’t matter if you don’t live in Wisconsin, or if you’ve even visited; you need to pay attention to what you’re about to learn.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court election on April 1, 2025 is a turning point, an intersection that’ll either lead America forward on our current trajectory, or back to what we almost became. Though Wisconsin is often passed over in headlines in favor of its coastal counterparts, its voters played a pivotal role in the 2016, 2020, and 2024 elections, all but deciding who went on to lead our nation.

If you care about election integrity, you need to care about Wisconsin.

Your two candidates for the open Supreme Court seat are Susan Crawford and Brad Schimel. Each offers a unique vision for their state’s future, but keeps them well under-wraps. Unlike traditional political elections, justices are not supposed to be ideological in their role … but until 2023, there were four conservative and three liberal-leaning justices on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Drop-boxes are once again legal in Wisconsin. While lawmakers are rushing to enshrine voter ID laws before April, and restrict the use of mail-in ballots, there is no guarantee these will be protected under a more liberally-balanced bench. Just as a reminder: drop boxes, mail-in ballots, and not requiring voter ID laws were three of the biggest issues during the 2020 presidential election. 

Wisconsin essentially chose the last three presidents by razor-thin margins of 20,000 to 30,000 votes. This incredibly small number of voters are why Wisconsin matters to you, no matter what state you live in. The next Wisconsin Supreme Court justice will have the power to enshrine or destroy election integrity, not just for their state, but for all of us.

If we don’t have fair and secure elections in Wisconsin, we don’t have fair and secure elections in America.
