Green Card Lottery Halted After Campus Tragedy

The incident has raised new questions about the effectiveness of current immigration policies and highlighted concerns within the system. As believers and citizens, we must demand accountability and action to protect our communities. Security is one of our guiding truths, and it is time to uphold it with strength.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has taken a bold and necessary step. Last week, she announced the immediate suspension of the Diversity Visa Program. This decision comes after investigators discovered the suspect entered the country through this very lottery system. The suspect, a Portuguese national, used the “diversity lottery” to gain a green card in 2017. This program, which selects immigrants at random rather than by merit, has now been linked to a devastating loss of innocent life.

Secretary Noem stated clearly that this pause is vital to ensure no more Americans are harmed. She acted under the direction of President Donald Trump, who has long warned about the dangers of this specific visa lottery. The program allows individuals from countries with low immigration rates to enter the U.S. purely by chance. Critics have argued for years that this system prioritizes randomness over safety and national security. Now, we see the tragic cost of ignoring those warnings.

President Trump previously tried to end this program during his first term. He cited the 2017 truck attack in New York City, committed by a terrorist who also entered via the diversity lottery. That attack killed eight people and injured many more. Yet, despite these clear warnings, the program persisted until now. We need leadership that is willing to make tough decisions to prevent evil from entering our gates.

Our guiding truths remind us that justice and security go hand in hand. A government’s primary role is to protect its people from harm. When a policy fails to do that, it must be changed immediately.
