Harris To Reportedly Skip Catholic Charity Dinner
Vice President Kamala Harris will apparently skip the Al Smith charity dinner in October, breaking tradition for Democratic presidential candidates, the Daily Caller reported in September.
The annual dinner benefits Catholic Charities and plays host to an estimated 1,500 guests “and lighthearted roasts,” wrote Daily Caller’s Juliana Frieman. Comedian Jim Gaffigan is expected to host the event, which typically takes place in Midtown Manhattan. Reports suggest the dinner will instead happen in a battleground state in 2024.
“I’m so honored to be MC-ing this year’s Al Smith Memorial Dinner on October 17. Too bad I don’t recognize those two names in the middle of the invitation. Anyone ever heard of them?” Gaffigan wrote prior to Harris rejecting the invite. (WATCH: Viral Video Reveals The Many Accents Of Kamala Harris)
Trump Confirms Appearance
Former President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign confirmed his plans to attend, Archdiocese spokesperson Joseph Zwilling claimed. His prior appearances include his now-infamous roast of twice failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. “One of the things I noticed tonight — and I’ve known Hillary for a long time — that this is the first time ever, ever, that Hillary is sitting down and speaking to major corporate leaders and not getting paid for it,” he said at the 2016 dinner.
“We are disappointed that [Harris] will not be with us, as this is an evening of unity and putting aside political differences in support of a good cause of helping women and children in need regardless of race, creed, or background,” said Zwilling. “We hope she reconsiders.” (Trump-Harris Debate A ‘Gift’ For Americans. The last presidential candidate to turn down an invitation to the dinner, which first took place in 1945, was Vice President Walter Mondale in 1984. Mondale was the unsuccessful Democratic challenger to former President Ronald Reagan.
