Holiness has an image problem. For many people, the word calls up a cold list of rules, a religious frown, someone trying very hard to look better than everyone else. So we keep our distance, assuming holiness is for the extra-spiritual few.

But that picture gets it backward. Holiness was never meant to push you away from life or from people. It was meant to draw you close to the Father and make you look more like Him.

The writer of Hebrews puts it plainly. “Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14, ESV). Notice what holiness is tied to here: seeing the Lord. It is not a hoop to jump through. It is the path that brings you face to face with God Himself.

The word translated “holiness” is the Greek hagiasmos. It carries the idea of being set apart, made clean, and devoted to God. To be holy is to be increasingly His, less tangled in the things that pull you from Him and more shaped by the things that reflect Him.

And that is the heart of it. God does not call you to holiness so you can perform. He calls you to holiness so you can resemble your Father. “But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy'” (1 Peter 1:15-16). His holiness is the pattern; ours is the family resemblance growing in us.

This kind of change does not happen by gritting your teeth. It happens by drawing near. “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another” (2 Corinthians 3:18). We become like the One we behold. The closer you get to the Father, the more His character rubs off on you.

And here is the part we often miss. Holiness is not just for you. As you are shaped into His likeness, you become a blessing to the people around you. A holy life is a life that carries His peace into a tense room, His patience into a hard conversation, His mercy into someone else’s worst day. What God grows in secret, He spends in service to others.

So do not settle for a holiness that only guards you from sin. Pursue the kind that pulls you into the presence of the Father, remakes you into His image, and overflows into everyone He puts in your path.

ACT

This week, treat holiness as nearness rather than performance. Each morning, before the demands of the day crowd in, ask the Father to make one specific area of your life more like His, then look for a chance to bless someone out of what He is growing in you.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8)

“But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct.” (1 Peter 1:15)

“Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

Pray

Father, thank You that holiness is not a wall between us but a road toward You. Set me apart, make me clean, and shape me into Your likeness a little more each day. Draw me close enough that Your character becomes mine, and let what You grow in me spill over as a blessing to others. I do not want to merely look holy. I want to be near You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Comforting Closure

You are not expected to arrive at perfect holiness this week, or this year. God is patient, and He works one degree of glory at a time. Keep drawing near, keep saying yes to Him in the small things, and trust that the Father who called you holy is faithful to finish what He started. What He is forming in you will bless people long after today.
