California’s rate of homeschooled children rose 78% between 2017 and 2022, analysis revealed in October.
A majority of students educated in California’s public education system do not meet the basic standards for literacy, math, and science. While no one has ever associated California with good schooling, the new data suggests the predominantly Democrat-run state is in an educational crisis.
Analysis by The Washington Post stated “home schooling’s surging popularity crosses every measurable line of politics, geography, and demographics,” and there was “no correlation between school district quality, as measured by standardized test scores, and home-schooling growth.”
There Are Choices
Many states have already instituted Universal School Choice programs, which allow students in failing schools to receive tuition support from private schools. (LEARN MORE: Universal School Choice Enacted In 10th State. What Does This Mean For You?)
“I think for a lot of homeschool parents they see the so-called socialization at public schools and they want nothing to do with it,” California Policy Center VP Lance Christensen said of classroom learning. “There is a lot more bullying at schools. The state legislature has now passed these willful defiance laws getting rid of suspension or real discipline for kids who act out, so most parents see it as a negative to send their kids to public school.”
Community Keeps Us Going
The government may think your child’s life and education career are best conducted under their rule, but we know that parents should always come first. There are entire cities where public schools can’t educate one student to math proficiency — do you really want this for your child’s experience?
