During the COVID-19 pandemic, an 87-year-old church in Belton, Texas, decided to do things their way — not the way they were told — and the decision saved more than 1,000 lives.

“Like everyone else, we were forced to stop our in-person services beginning in March, but we knew we had to keep meeting the needs of our community and giving people a sense of normalcy that they were so desperately missing,” Crossroad Church senior leadership Matt Thrasher told AG News. So instead of going online, the church went out into the community. (LEARN MORE: Watch And Be Inspired By Asbury Revival’s Inter-Denominational Phenomenon)

“We picked up trash, we partnered with local food banks to feed people, and worked hard to just care for people during that time,” Matt’s wife, Holly Thrasher told the outlet. They also held an Easter service in the great outdoors that saw roughly 5,000 people in attendance.

The Best Decision

“It was different, of course, but it turned out to be one of the best Easters we have ever had,” Thrasher noted. While most churches lost members during the pandemic, the Crossroads leadership’s decisions paid off. “People loved it,” said one operations pastor, Kameron P. Kersey.

“People just wanted that hour of normalcy. It turned out, we were part of only 3% of U.S. churches that actually grew during COVID,” Holly added. (LEARN MORE: ‘God Goes Before Us’: Thousands Attend Revival In Arkansas)

Growing Your Church

After COVID, the church reopened, and the congregation doubled again. Crossroads became one of the fastest-growing Assemblies of God churches in early 2022, a trend that continued into 2023. “Since Easter, we have had right at 2,000 people on our property every week,” Holly added, plus 1,051 salvations.
