The internet has erupted with outrage after a driver of an 18-wheel semi-truck made an illegal U-turn on a Florida interstate, causing a fatal accident that took the lives of three people. Video showed the driver displaying no remorse seconds after the crash. Making matters worse, the driver of the semi-truck had been issued a CDL license by the state of California despite being an illegal immigrant. This has fueled anger on social media, prompting many to ask how such a thing could happen.

The video, acquired by Fox News, shows the driver’s lack of concern as another vehicle collides with his truck. VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED:

Immigration Concerns Raised

Millions of illegal aliens have entered the United States for decades, with the problem only intensifying in recent years. According to Fox News, the Department of Homeland Security reported:

“According to Singh, he has no serious physical or mental medical conditions. Singh claims to have no known immediate relatives serving in the U.S. military and is not the primary caretaker of a person with mental or physical disability, a minor or person with a serious illness. Singh claims to not be married and has no minor dependent children. Singh is not a victim of domestic violence in the United States or human trafficking. After careful consideration of all factors and available records, Singh is considered a significant threat to public safety and is an exceptional circumstance warranting enforcement action due to the serious nature of his criminal history. ERO San Francisco is seeking HRO’s approval to place Singh in removal proceedings.”

This case has led the Department of Homeland Security to direct ICE to consider immigration enforcement at truck weight stations across America, according to political commentator Benny Johnson.

Harjinder Singh, the truck driver, was arrested after the accident and charged with vehicular homicide.

California’s Role

Many on social media are asking how this could have been prevented. One explanation may lie in a statement posted in California’s Newsroom on their government website, which read:

“As other states cruelly target migrants and vilify immigration, Governor Gavin Newsom today announced the signing of legislation that will support immigrants, advance equity, and expand opportunity.”

Governor Newsom further defended the policies enacted by himself and the state legislature, stating:

“California is expanding opportunity for everyone, regardless of immigration status. We’re a state of refuge – a majority-minority state, where 27 percent of us are immigrants. That’s why I’m proud to announce the signing of today’s bills to further support our immigrant community, which makes our state stronger every single day.”

Among the new policies was one especially controversial:

“Undocumented Californians will be able to obtain a State ID, a critical step for inclusion and meaningful participation in our communities and economy.”

Other States with Similar Laws

California is not alone. Currently, 19 states and Washington, D.C. allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses. These states include:

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and the District of Columbia (D.C.).

Opponents of Governor Newsom argue that laws like California’s directly contributed to the Florida tragedy. Allie Beth Stuckey voiced her frustration, calling the policies an example of “toxic empathy.”
