A sitting Supreme Court Justice was targeted by a dangerous and deliberate false police report last week. The incident is a sobering reminder that threats against conservative public figures in America are not slowing down; they are growing bolder.

This is what happened at Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s home, what law enforcement confirmed, and why this attack fits into a deeply troubling pattern that every American should take seriously.

Police Rush to Barrett’s Virginia Home

On the evening of May 28, 2026, Fairfax County Police in Virginia responded to a call reporting sounds of gunshots at the home of Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett. Officers arrived and immediately contacted the security detail already stationed at the residence.

The security team, which maintains around-the-clock coverage of the justice, confirmed the report was false. No shots had been fired. No crime had occurred. Fairfax County police stated that officers “quickly determined that the report was fictitious” and that “no additional police resources were utilized.”

Audio from police dispatch, posted to social media by freelance photographer Andrew Leyden, captured officers describing the address as having “24-hour security coverage for a high-priority resident of the county.” An officer on the scene confirmed he had “made contact with security” and that the detail hadn’t “heard anything.”

The following morning, Justice Barrett took her seat on the bench as scheduled, read two opinions she had authored, and made no public mention of the incident.

What Swatting Is and Why It Is So Dangerous

Swatting is a tactic in which someone places a false emergency call, reporting a shooting, hostage situation, bomb threat, or other serious crime, to draw a large police response to a target’s home. The goal is to create a situation that could turn deadly.

Utah Sen. Mike Lee responded directly to news of the attack on X. “Swatting is an attempt to get an innocent person killed, in this case, a sitting Supreme Court Justice,” he wrote. “The proper response will be putting the offender in prison for many, many years.”

The FBI has been investigating the rise in swatting incidents targeting conservatives. FBI Director Kash Patel has publicly confirmed that several conservative figures have been targeted, and the bureau has opened investigations into the pattern. Swatting calls are not pranks. They are calculated acts intended to weaponize law enforcement against innocent people.

A Pattern of Threats That Began After Dobbs

The swatting attack on Barrett did not happen in a vacuum. Conservative Supreme Court justices have faced an escalating wave of threats, protests, and violence since May 2022, when a draft opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization was leaked. The draft signaled the court was prepared to overturn Roe v. Wade.

In the weeks that followed, abortion-rights protesters gathered outside the private homes of Barrett, Justice Brett Kavanaugh, and other conservative justices. Around-the-clock security was added for all justices, a measure that remains in place today.

In June 2022, a California man, Nicholas John Roske, was arrested near Kavanaugh’s Maryland home carrying a gun, knife, and pepper spray. He admitted he had traveled there to assassinate the justice. Roske was later sentenced to eight years in federal prison.

The threats did not stop there. In March 2025, Barrett’s sister, who lives in South Carolina, received a bomb threat. An email sent to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office claimed a pipe bomb had been placed in her mailbox. Law enforcement responded and found no device, but the message was unmistakable: the targeting of Justice Barrett had extended to her family.

The Bigger Picture: Rising Threats Against Conservatives

The attack on Barrett is part of a broader and deeply alarming trend. Threats against conservatives, including elected officials, appointed judges, and ordinary citizens, have increased sharply in recent years.

President Donald Trump survived two assassination attempts in 2024. The first came on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a bullet grazed his ear during a campaign rally after a gunman positioned himself on a nearby rooftop. A second attempt followed later that year.

Earlier in May 2026, a California Army veteran known for displaying Trump memorabilia and American flags outside his home, often called the “Trump House,” was attacked and beaten to death. These are not isolated incidents. They form a pattern of political violence aimed at silencing people on the right.

Justice Barrett was on the bench the morning after the swatting call. She did her job. She read her opinions. She did not flinch.

But the people responsible for these attacks, whether placing false emergency calls, making bomb threats, or committing acts of physical violence, are counting on silence and fear. They must not get it.

Every American who values the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary, and the safety of public servants should stand firmly against this violence. The men and women serving in these roles, appointed, elected, or otherwise, deserve to be safe in their own homes.
