Legal Scholar Argues Ten Commandments May Actually Be Twelve; Do You Agree?

An op-ed written by legal scholar Steve Lubet, published by The Hill in June, argues that the Ten Commandments “could become a dozen.”
States like Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and more and poised to display the Ten Commandments across public spaces, particularly in schools. Though each state has dictated their own rules about the displays, groups like ours here at Million Voices, My Faith Votes, and more, are working to help fund the creation of the posters for classrooms and curriculums. “Nothing is more deep-rooted in the fabric of our American tradition of education than the Ten Commandments,” said Texas state Rep. Candy Nobel, according to the outlet. So, of course, others are coming out of the woodwork to try and either undermine or eradicate these essential lessons from the minds of American children.
Lubet’s Odd Argument
“Although titled “An Act relating to the display of the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms,” the law’s mandatory language, with no changes or additions permitted, actually includes 11 commandments (or even 12, depending on what counts), without numbering them,” Lubet wrote in his op-ed. “I believe I know why.”
He goes on to say that the Ten Commandments appear twice in the Bible, in Exodus and Deuteronomy, describing Moses’s receipt of the covenant upon Mount Sinai. “Neither iteration provides directions for organizing the text into 10 laws, abridged to fit on a 16” by 20” poster, as commanded by the Texas statute,” Lubet writes, suggesting he may not completely understand what he has read. Lubet then tries to separate out each individual denomination and cultural group, arguing that each will fail to find their representation in the posters displayed in each classroom, and that if you break down each individual phrase in the Ten Commandments, there may actually be 12, depending on your denomination.
If you want to read the rest of his (fairly pedantic) argument, you can do so on The Hill via the link above. It is likely that Lubet will not be alone in trying to manipulate Americans into completely misunderstanding the purpose of these new laws.
Don’t Let Loud People Misinterpret Faith
Many people like Lubet will try and argue that their individual interpretation of the Bible is the correct one, even though it clearly is not. These individuals and groups will probably fight very hard to ensure our children are not exposed to these essential teaching, despite their obvious benefits to society as a whole. We have come so far in our Great American Revival that we cannot let these actors bring darkness back to the places that Christians are bringing light and a Biblical worldview.
It’s happening.
We’re restoring the 10 Commandments to public school classrooms — starting in Texas and Arkansas, and aiming to reach every state in America.
For decades, these foundational truths were removed from our schools. But thanks to recent Supreme Court rulings, we now have the opportunity — and the responsibility — to bring them back.
In Texas alone, over 11,000 schools are waiting. In Arkansas, more than 1,000 campuses are ready. That’s over 350,000 classrooms where this message can shine — with your help.
🔹 For just $25–$35, you can sponsor an entire school.
🔹 You’ll help place a poster in every classroom.
🔹 You’ll be part of a national movement to reclaim moral clarity and truth.
Let’s start in Texas and Arkansas — and then mobilize across the country.

Keep Acting Local
Politicians you elect in your city, county, and state usually have a greater impact on your daily life than anyone in the federal government. During “off-years,” these local races send ripple effects throughout American communities. It is up to you to shape them.
It seems like every time we at Million Voices speak to lawmakers and their teams, they all tell us the same thing: if just 10 people in their district write letters about issues that matter to them, elected officials know they have a serious crisis on their hands. A thousand people could message that same lawmaker via email or social media, and it would mean nothing. But hand-written, or even printed and signed letters, will make your politicians take action (if they really care about your vote, that is).
Contacting your representatives should be easy, but there are myriad ways they can ignore your calls to action. That’s where we come in.
Yes, Million Voices helps you with voter guides. Yes, we send letters from YOU directly to your elected officials because it’s the only way to guarantee they’ll listen to you. Yes, we publish data, articles, text messages, and help bridge the gap between education and civic action. But what do you want? Tell us today.
We want to make YOU the hero of our American story by giving you the tools you need to make a difference, from your local, state, all the way up to the federal level.
Join us in our mission to advocate for religious freedom, support fair and secure elections, and uphold the values that this great nation was built upon. Tell us what you want from the next four years, and we will fight to make it a reality … again!
