Maine Bars Trump From Ballot

Maine has become the second state to try and bar former President Donald Trump from the 2024 presidential race, according to The Associated Press.
Maine’s Democratic secretary of state Shenna Bellows removed Trump from the ballot on Thursday, citing the state’s Civil War-era insurrection clause. Trump’s Campaign said it is appealing the decision. At present, the decision has been stayed until the U.S. Supreme Court decides whether to uphold it or not.
Bellows believes Trump is ineligible for office because of where he was during the January 6 incidents at the U.S. Capitol. But Trump has never been tried or convicted based upon the events of that day. The move comes just days after Colorado attempted to do the same thing to Trump.
What Happened In Colorado?
Trump is the first ever president in history to be deemed ineligible to run for presidency under a unique Constitutional clause that stops officials who’ve been found guilty of engaging in an “insurrection or rebellion,” according to Newsmax. Colorado’s Supreme Court voted 3-4 to stop Trump’s name from appearing on the ballot in the 2024 presidential election.
“We do not reach these conclusions lightly,” the majority justices wrote following the ruling. “We are mindful of the magnitude and weight of the questions now before us. We are likewise mindful of our solemn duty to apply the law, without fear or favor, and without being swayed by public reaction to the decisions that the law mandates we reach.” (LEARN MORE: Supreme Court To Hear Ultimate Free Speech, Censorship Case)
