Major Case Against Texas AG Ken Paxton Receives Update

Prosecutors in Houston announced in March that all charges against Attorney General Ken Paxton have officially been dropped after nearly a decade.

Paxton was first indicted on state securities fraud charges in 2015, not long after he took office as Texas AG, according to the Texas Scorecard. Paxton was accused of failing to disclose his financial interest to potential investors by prosecutors in Collin County after multiple other counties declined to take on the case.

The trial was set to begin in April 2024 after nine years of delays while prosecutors allegedly stalled to increase their pay, the outlet noted.

All Charges Dismissed

Paxton and prosecutors decided in late March to reach a deal that would dismiss all charges and cancel the trial. Part of the deal includes Paxton’s agreement to pay $300,000 in restitution and conduct 100 hours of community service. He must also take a 15-hour legal ethics course.

“The agreement allows him to get back to representing the citizens of the State of Texas. But let me be clear, at no time was he going to enter any plea bargain agreement or admit to conduct that simply did not occur. There is no admission of any wrongdoing on Ken’s part in the agreement because there was no wrongdoing on his part,” Paxton’s attorney said of the deal.

Paxton’s Comments

“For over a decade, my family and I have been dealing with the ongoing stress of these accusations, and are relieved to finally have a resolution in this matter. The prosecution came to us to begin negotiations and we were able to come to an agreement on terms. There will never be a conviction in this case nor am I guilty,” Paxton told reporters. “I look forward to putting this behind me. I want to thank my family, team, and supporters for sticking by my side. Dealing with a 10-year case looming over our heads was no easy task. I am glad to move on and will provide further comment in the weeks ahead.”
