Mitch McConnell To Retire In 2024

Senate Minority leader, Republican Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell will retire from his position in January 2025, he announced Wednesday.
McConnell is the longest-serving Senate party leader in America’s history. “I turned 82 last week,” he told the Senate Chamber in February. “The end of my contributions are closer than I prefer.” He went on to say he was “unconflicted about the good within our country, and the irreplaceable role we play as the leader of the free world. It’s why I worked so hard to get the national security package passed earlier this month,” Breitbart reported.
McConnell has fallen out of favor with Republicans in recent years, both lawmakers and voters. He partnered with Majority Leader, Democratic New York Sen. Chuck Schumer to prioritize a foreign aid and pro-migration package that faced huge opposition from his party, but he did it anyway. (LEARN MORE: McConnell Turns Against The Border Bill)
McConnell’s Perception
“Believe me, I know the politics within my party at this particular moment in time. I have many faults. Misunderstanding politics is not one of them,” he claimed. “But now it’s 2024. As Ecclesiastes tells us, to everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven. One of life’s most under-appreciated talents is to know when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter. So I stand before you today, Mr. President and my colleagues, to say this will be my last term as Republican leader.”
McConnell has also faced significant health problems in recent months. He’s fallen, had unexplained bruising, and completely froze in front of crowds and cameras on two different occasions in the last year.
“I’m not going anywhere anytime soon. I’ll complete my job my colleagues have given me until we select a new leader in November and they take the helm next January. I’ll finish the job that the people of Kentucky hired me to do as well, albeit from a different seat. And I’m actually looking forward to that,” he noted.
