MLB Warns Giants Players Over Bible Verses

Major League Baseball is facing sharp backlash after warning three San Francisco Giants players for writing Bible verses on their Pride Night caps. Critics say the league applied a double standard, pointing to its open support for Black Lives Matter messaging in 2020.
The dispute centers on pitchers Landen Roupp, JT Brubaker, and Ryan Walker. During a Friday game against the Chicago Cubs, the three players wrote “Gen 9:12-16” on their rainbow-themed caps in white lettering.
That passage from Genesis 9:12-16 refers to God’s covenant with Noah after the flood, marked by a rainbow. The verses describe the rainbow as a promise between God and every living creature.
How the Controversy Began
The MLB Bible verse controversy quickly spread online and drew strong reactions. The league issued a warning to the players about future uniform violations.
MLB said the warning had nothing to do with the players’ faith. “To be clear, this routine verbal warning not to wear the hat in future games is not disciplinary and had absolutely nothing to do with the content of the message,” the league said.
The league pointed to its uniform rules, which ban writing of any kind on caps and jerseys. “We respect players’ right to free expression. However, writing of any kind, with any message, is prohibited per Major League Baseball’s uniform regulations,” MLB added.
Roupp, who wrote the verse on his cap, said he meant no ill will. “It’s just what I stand for, and what I stand on: I believe in God,” he told reporters after the game.
Republican Leaders Respond
Vice President JD Vance was among the first to weigh in. Reacting to a report about the warnings, the JD Vance MLB post on X read, “Trump won we don’t have to do this anymore.”
Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., sent a letter to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. He accused the league of a “pattern of discrimination” against players who “profess their Christian faith.”
“The freedom to live out one’s faith does not end at the ballpark gate,” Hawley wrote. He demanded answers about the league’s uniform and religious expression policies.
Rep. Wesley Hunt, R-Texas, also criticized the league on social media. “While they bent over backwards for BLM messaging in 2020, they’re cracking down on religious freedom in 2026,” Hunt wrote. “This isn’t neutrality, it’s political discrimination against faith.”
The 2020 Black Lives Matter Contrast
Much of the criticism focuses on how the league treated speech in the past. In 2020, several teams stenciled “Black Lives Matter” and “United for Change” on pitching mounds and jersey patches.
The league also suspended its uniform rules that year, allowing players to write social messages on their cleats. The official MLB account once shared a photo of Giants players kneeling for the national anthem with a Black Lives Matter hashtag.
Supporters of the players say this history shows a clear MLB double standard. They argue the league promoted political speech then but now enforces its rulebook against religious speech.
Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., echoed that point and called for a reversal. “Let me get this straight, @MLB teams can host ‘pride night’ but players wearing bible verses is an issue?” she wrote on X.
“Last I checked, freedom of religion was still one of the founding principles of our nation and enshrined in our constitution,” Britt added.
Legal Threats and the Nationals Incident
Some officials hinted at legal consequences for the league. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier suggested possible action, writing, “Do you practice religious discrimination in Florida, @MLB? You’ll be hearing from my office soon.”
Harmeet Dhillon, the assistant attorney general for civil rights, warned the league as well. “I have referred this matter to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission,” she wrote on social media.

Hawley also raised an earlier case involving the Washington Nationals. A team executive was fired after a hidden-camera video showed him appearing to say pitcher Trevor Williams was kept out of promotional content because of his faith.
Williams, a devout Catholic, had earlier criticized the Los Angeles Dodgers for honoring a group that uses drag and religious imagery. The Nationals denied hiding Williams, saying he had been injured at the time.
Hawley Threatens a Subpoena
The three Giants players have not been fined or punished. Still, Hawley signaled he is prepared to escalate the matter.
He said he would subpoena Manfred to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee if the league pursues discipline. Hawley also pointed to the league’s federal antitrust exemption as an area for review.
“MLB has a sweetheart deal from the federal government,” Hawley said. He argued the league “plays by different rules than any other business in America.”
The Giants reaffirmed their support for Pride Night and the LGBTQ community. As of the league’s last public statement on the matter, MLB maintained the warning was about uniform policy alone, not the players’ message.
