Most Gender-Confused Youth Grow Out Of It

May 9, 2024

A study published in early 2024 found that most children who experience confusion over their gender grow out of it.

The Netherlands-based study published in the latest copy of Archives of Sexual Behavior found that in a study of 2,772 teens over 15 years, most individuals who were uncomfortable with their gender grew out of the experience. During the early stages of the study, 11% of participants felt discontent with their gender and said “yes” to wanting to be the opposite sex. By age 26, only 4% of these participants felt the same way.

“The prevalence decreased with age,” the authors noted. “… Gender non-contentedness, while being relatively common during early adolescence, in general, decreases with age and appears to be associated with a poorer self-concept and mental health throughout development.” Girls were more likely than boys to feel discomfort in their bodies around age 13 and 16. Reliability Of The Data

The study is groundbreaking in that it followed the same group of teenagers for the entirety of the research. This allowed the authors to “model developmental trajectories of gender non-contentedness from late childhood through early adulthood.”

Data shared by the study suggests time is one of the most important factors in dealing with childhood issues related to gender. “Unfortunately, what our children are not being given today is time—time to experience and outgrow the natural (sometimes painful) stages of pubertal growth, along with the reassurance that, with time, they will eventually feel comfortable in their own skin,” Ethics and Public Policy Center director of the Person and Identity Project Mary Rice Hasson told the Catholic News Agency in regards to the study. “Instead, gender clinicians and counselors convince parents that their children are in crisis and need puberty blockers or other hormonal interventions. It’s not true. What they really need is reassurance and time to mature,” she added.
