New York’s high court handed Democrats a big win on Tuesday, ordering a congressional map to be redrawn ahead of the 2024 elections, Politico reported.

This move allows Democrats to gerrymander the state into pockets that help them win. It also gives them the ability to get rid of several Republicans all at the same time, regardless of what their constituents or voter demographics think.

A similar situation is occurring in North Carolina but allowed Republicans to pick up three of four seats. But this doesn’t mean the balance will remain the same in the House.

Here’s How The Process Is Meant To Work

“The commission draws a map and sends it to the Legislature for an up-or-down vote. If the Legislature rejects that first map, the commission gets another crack at it. If the Legislature rejects it a second time, then — and only then — does the Legislature get to draw the lines,” Politico described.

But during the 2022 midterms, it didn’t happen like this. After the commission failed to agree upon a map, the Democrat-controlled legislature just did their own and handed it down. The Court of Appeals in New York threw this map out and designed their own.

According to Politico, Democrats often try to fight with the power that comes with gerrymandering. They’re helped by judges, who will side with their appointees, traditionally. And in New York, the seven judges are all Democrat appointees.
