Obama-Appointed Judge Hands Win To GOP

A federal judge in George upheld the state’s newly drawn GOP congressional legislative map despite many objections from Democrats, the Daily Caller News Foundation reported in December.

District Court Judge Steve Jones, who was appointed under former President Barack Obama, found in October that lawmakers had redrawn maps in such a way they diluted minority votes. This move violated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, so Jones demanded a switch-up. The new maps solve the problem while also maintaining the Republican’s majority advantage.

“The court finds that the general assembly fully complied with this court’s order requiring the creation of Black-majority districts in the regions of the state where vote dilution was found,” Jones wrote.

What Do The New Districts Do?

The new maps modified a district currently held by Democrat Rep. Lucy McBath, where minority voters are not part of the majority. “I won’t let Republicans decide when my time in Congress is over,” McBath said Thursday via emails for fundraising.

As we move through this election year, there are going to be many opportunities for politicians to manipulate their situations to favor their preferred outcomes. Don’t let your local, state or federally elected politicians do anything to stop your right to representation.
