“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).
“He alone is my Rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken” (Psalm 62:6).
There are many references in the Bible to the Lord being a Rock. This metaphor signifies that God is strong, immovable, and stable. He is our foundation—our ONLY fixed source of strength, protection, hope, and refuge. Moses wrote, “He is the Rock; His deeds are perfect. Everything He does is just and fair. He is a faithful God who does no wrong; how just and upright He is!” (Deuteronomy 32:4).
In 1834, songwriter, Edward Mote, wrote the hymn, “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less.” The chorus: “On Christ the solid Rock I stand; all other ground is sinking sand; all other ground is sinking sand,” references the illustration of two builders in Matthew 7:24-27. The “wise” builder listened to the teachings of Jesus and acted on them, metaphorically building a house (his life) on the solid rock. Heavy rain, flooding, and high wind couldn’t destroy the house because it was on a firm foundation. On the contrary, the foolish builder did not listen to or obey the Word of God—He built his house (his life) on the sand. The rain, floods, and wind collapsed his house because there was nothing to fortify it from shifting and sinking. When we build our lives on the firm foundation we have in Jesus, we can withstand any storm that comes our way.
