Perverted Laws, Perfect Judge

Perverted Laws, Perfect Judge, Million Voices Creative Team

We live in a time when justice often feels upside down. What is evil is praised, and what is good is condemned. Leaders rewrite laws to protect wickedness, and the innocent are left unguarded. It can feel as though the very system meant to uphold truth has been hijacked to promote lies.

Habakkuk saw the same thing in his day. He lamented that “the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; so justice goes forth perverted” (Habakkuk 1:4). Instead of restraining evil, the courts bent truth to serve corruption. Instead of protecting the righteous, they empowered the wicked. It wasn’t just delay, it was distortion.

That’s what makes this verse hit so hard. It names the danger of perverted justice: it doesn’t just fail to protect, it actively harms. When justice is twisted, it undermines trust, mocks God’s standards, and leaves the vulnerable exposed. And just like Habakkuk, we may find ourselves asking why God allows such things.

But the Lord is not absent. His justice cannot be corrupted, and His judgment is never delayed beyond its proper time. Earthly systems may fail, but divine justice will always prevail. The victories of the wicked are only for a season; the Judge of all the earth will make every wrong right, in time.

Our task is to hold fast to what is true, to speak with courage, and to live faithfully even when surrounded by corruption. We do not despair, because we know God sees what others distort. His justice will stand when every crooked decree crumbles.

Call To Action

God has called His people to carry out justice. While you may not be a judge, you are a voter and a child of God. Starting today, ask God to break your heart for what breaks His. What issues are facing your community today, or your nation, that burden you. Pray for those involved and then get active. There are countless ways to pursue things aligned with justice: non profit organizations, candidates for office, volunteering at your local police department, spending your time in a campaign for justice on any number of biblical justice issues. The key is to get out there, using your time, your resources, your skills, and your heart to make a difference.

“So that He may guard the paths of justice and protect the way of His loyal followers. Then you will understand righteousness, justice, and integrity—every good path.” (Proverbs 2:8-9)

“Your throne, God, is forever and ever, the scepter of Your kingdom is a scepter of justice.” (Psalms 45:6)

“May You judge Your servants, condemning the wicked man by bringing what he has done on his own head and providing justice for the righteous by rewarding him according to his righteousness.” (2 Chronicles 6:23)

Prayer

God, break my heart for what breaks Yours. Showing me the things that must be changed to restore justice. Help me to be attentive and aware of what is happening around me and guide my heart and my eyes to be open to the true injustices around me; give me strategy on how to engage those issues with Your presence and Your heart. Teach me how to steward justice according to Your word.

Comforting Closure

Justice does not always mean you have to must do something radical. It simply means you are working to make the crooked way straight. Sometimes, that does mean making very hard decisions, but with God, all things are possible. And when it comes to justice, you are carrying out His will alone, and He will be with you every step of the way.
