Only a quarter of Americans said their views on the Israel and the Israel-Hamas war were swayed by reading the Bible, according to the Christian Post.

The outlet described a survey conducted by Lifeway Research and The Philos Project, which asked 1,252 American Christians their views on the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Only 27% of respondents said the Bible influenced their views on the conflict, which suggests 73% didn’t feel the Good Book informed their perspective.

But in reality, American Christians said the media informs a majority of their perspective, with the Bible coming in second for around 56% of those who took part in the survey. (LEARN MORE: Major News Organization Rejects All Harvard, MIT, Penn Grads Over School’s Antisemitism)

The Need For Peace

“American Christians have been following the war between Israel and Hamas, and two-thirds of those who attend church most often say their church has prayed for peace in Israel,” said Lifeway Research Executive Director Scott McConnell in a statement. “While a majority of American Christians support military action by Israel now, a much larger group believe lasting peace must come by mutual agreement of Palestinians and Israelis.”

When asked about the best potential outcome from the conflict, American Christians said: “Israel subdues Hamas and establishes long-term security over and control of Gaza,” and “Israel subdues Hamas and resumes negotiations with other Palestinian leaders on a permanent political solution to disagreements.” (LEARN MORE: Pastor Greg Laurie Speaks of Biblical Prophecy Fulfillment Over Israel-Hamas War)

“While a noticeable minority of American Christians are critical of some of Israel’s policies prior to October 7, 2023, a majority have positive views of Israel and feel a strong response to the terrorist attack is warranted,” McConnell said. “Support for the defense of Israel does not supersede American Christians’ desire for civilian lives to be preserved, for negotiations to take place, and to continue praying for peace.”
