Property Taxes: The Unseen Threat to Ownership

Across this nation, families, seniors, and hardworking citizens are voicing their frustration about property taxes. The movement to abolish these taxes is no longer a whisper—it’s a shout echoing in communities from coast to coast. The essential question is now in the open: if we are forced to pay perpetual taxes on our property, are we truly free to own it? Recent debates and real-world stories have fueled this conversation, leading many to believe substantive change is within reach.

More and more people are recognizing that property tax, in its current form, is undermining the promise that if you pay off your home, it’s truly yours.

One user on X made it plain for most voters to understand.

The Double Standard of “Unrealized Gains”

To understand how unfair this feels to the average homeowner, look at how we treat other types of wealth. When you invest in a stock portfolio and its value doubles, you do not pay a dime in taxes on that growth until you actually sell the stock. If your daily paycheck stays the exact same, you do not magically owe more income tax.

But for some reason, the place where you lay your head at night plays by a completely different set of rules. Homeowners are taxed on “unrealized gains,” a phantom number someone in a county office decided on paper. This is not income. This is not cash in your pocket. It is simply a bill for a perceived value you never received.

This kind of taxation is not only frustrating, but it’s also unjust. As a homeowner, you are being asked to pay taxes on something that isn’t real; it’s simply a perceived value that may or may not align with the actual worth of your property.

Meanwhile, investors who own stocks or other investments don’t have to pay any taxes on their gains until they sell them. This creates an unequal playing field for homeowners, who are essentially penalized for investing in a home instead of the stock market.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. We can demand change and push for fairer taxation policies that benefit all homeowners. By advocating for a shift towards taxing realized gains instead of unrealized ones, we can level the playing field and ensure that homeowners are not burdened with unfair taxes.

Furthermore, by speaking out and educating others about this issue, we can raise awareness and put pressure on lawmakers to make necessary changes. It’s time to take action and fight for fair taxation policies for homeowners.

A Threat to True Ownership

A house is not just a financial asset to be traded. It is where you raise your family, where you build your life, and where you find sanctuary. Under the current property tax system, you can do everything perfectly right. You can pay off your mortgage, live debt-free, and act as a faithful steward of your resources, only to get squeezed harder and harder every single year.

Why? Because of a hypothetical number you never turned into actual money. We must face a hard truth: you do not truly own something if the government can tax you out of it. This relentless cycle directly threatens economic stewardship and the security of the family home.

We Cannot Stay Silent

This issue is not about funding basic services or matching the pace of inflation. It is about an unjust burden placed on everyday citizens who simply want to keep what they have rightfully earned. People are starting to wake up and notice the heavy hand of taxation reaching into pockets that are already stretched thin.

We are called to be wise stewards of what we have been given, but we must also demand justice and fairness from those who govern us.

Fighting property taxes is an uphill battle. It is a tax that has been around for centuries, since America was settled, and it goes back even before that time, to ancient Rome. However, with the growth of industry, wealth, commerce, and overall abundance, there is a growing belief, rightfully so, that government services could be funded by other means than property taxes.

The only way this issue changes, however, is when the voters speak up.

Engaging in our political process should be clear, meaningful, and effective—but too often, people feel overlooked or unsure how to make an impact. That’s where we come in.

Million Voices equips citizens with tools that inform, inspire, and activate. Through our MVP Program, we help get voter resources into the hands of people who don’t typically vote—encouraging greater participation where it matters most.

We also offer devotions and opportunities for prayer, connecting faith with action. Through our Write Now Campaign, volunteers send letters to low-propensity voters in key areas, helping inspire them to engage and make their voices heard.
