Republicans nominated Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson as their most recent nominee for House Speaker after Rep. Tom Emmer withdrew following criticism from former President Donald Trump.
Johnson is the fourth member of the Republican party to be nominated in the most recent cycle for power, Newsmax reported. To win the overall seat, Johnson will need all members of the GOP to choose him at noon on Wednesday. He won a majority in a closed-door vote on Tuesday.
Emmer was expected to move forward with the nomination but bowed out suddenly following Trump’s opposition to his campaign. “I made my decision based on my relationship with the conference,” Emmer said of the situation and vowed to support whoever becomes the next nominee (Johnson).
